Help connect Largs
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Largs’s Slow Ways.

The route then heads a little inland and follows the pavement next to the A78 into Fairlie. Very soon, the route heads away from the main road and follows a wide arc along (mostly tarmac) forest tracks and estate roads through lovely countryside around Hunterston Castle. Eventually the A78 is rejoined, briefly, before the route heads uphill via Drummilling Road, to arrive in West Kilbride....

I travelled this route in June 2024 at the beginning and end of a lovely afternoon on the island....

I encountered no problems in walking the route, and I would also consider it suitable as a cycling route....

Mary Oz added Larwes three, a new walk from Largs to West Kilbride
Walk this routeThere was a concrete path along the edge of the beach, and although part of it was temporarily closed for repairs, it was easy to walk around that part on the beach itself. I feel that this has the potential to be a good route if this track recovers. I’m sure there is a good path from Fairlie Moor Road across a field or two to a gate into the woods surrounding Glen Burn and Linnford Waterfall, as I have found walk reports for here including this one https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=103679. One in the wood, the path was very nice and easy to follow, and brought me out to Biglies Farm....

Walk this routeThe section from Fairlie to the roundabout at Poteath OS Grid Ref: NS 20163 52104 is part of the Ayrshire Coastal Path and has a good tarmacked footpath, occasionally moving away slightly from the road....

I can’t believe I was pioneering this route; it was gorgeous! Despite the constant rain I was aware that there were wonderful views out across the Firth of Clyde to the islands and the Cowal Peninsula. Almost the entire route was on a quiet tarmacked lane with almost no traffic whatsoever, but with verges and hedges dripping with wild flowers....

There may be other routes from this point to the Fairlie Glen, either further up the hill, or through the woods past the cup and ring marked rock, but neither were clear on the ground, and as its currently shown I was forced to turn back....

Runs every 20-30 mins at peak times, crossing takes 15 mins. No accessibility issues as far as I could tell....
