Connect Kidderminster with Slow Ways
We’re creating a network of walking routes that connect all of Britain’s towns, cities and national parks
more walks and reviews are needed to fully connect Kidderminster to the verified network. Can you give a hike and help?
Give a hike!Help connect Kidderminster
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Kidderminster’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates
The previous reviewers have described this route quite comprehensively, and I would only add a comment that there are still footpath closures south of Bewdley as work on their flood defences continues. The current diversion (in May 2024) takes the walker up Acacia Avenue and onto Stourport Road. It’s a well signposted diversion, and doesn’t detract at all from a thoroughly enjoyable walk....

Going this way you obviously don’t get the beautiful views over Kinver Edge, but the scenery along the canal is nevertheless still very attractive and would be an excellent alternative for anyone with mobility issues....

Another pleasant Slow Ways easy to follow along pavements and country paths. The best part is through Hurcott Wood just after leaving Kidderminster with Blue bells at this time of year and bird song. The section along the A456 was safe with good pavements....

Then you go along nice field paths with good views before entering Chaddesley Wood and Randan Wood with bluebells throughout....

Time it right and you'll see the steam train go over the bridge at falling sands....

We leave at a bridge accessing a residential area; the access is easy to miss, a tarmacced road on the left of the towpath by the buildings. Past the houses, we cross the road into Brinton Park (watch the traffic, as the road bends here), following the tarmac path gradually uphill. Past the band-stand and toilets, we exit onto the main road, crossing to a residential road ahead. The track becomes an unpaved road approaching Blackstone Meadow, but it is seldom used by traffic....

The walk up the hill and then down again in Chaddesley Wood seemed a bit bemusing, especially as I saw no wildlife!...

The route passes through Harvington (where a short detour takes you to Harvington Hall, a moated Elizabethan Manor House famed for its numerous priest holes)....

David Sanderson added Kidbro two, a new walk from Kidderminster to Bromsgrove
Walk this routeI had wondered if the apparent detour around Dodford was worth it and stumbled upon two issues within a very short distance. 1 The route marked follows the line of a fence and not a footpath, not so critical if starting from Kidderminster, but leaving you looking for a non-existent path from Bromsgrove direction. 2 The Dodford Inn in no longer a pub and has very recently become an events venue...
David Sanderson
The street walking is at the Kidderminster end but is broken up by short sections along the canal and through Brinton Park....

Public transport a bit limited from Bewdley but the route links with the bus station at Kidderminster and the railway station is a short walk from the end....

David Sanderson added Bewkid three, a new walk from Bewdley to Kidderminster
Walk this routeThe plotting in Rifle Range is also awry, but only because the footpath at the east end is overgrown, and because the section between the edge of the woods and the entrance to Devil's Spittleful follows a footpath on the map which does not even closely follow the actual footpaths on the ground. All of these problems are addressed in Bewkid Three and the Rifle Range issues are addressed by Bewkid Two....

Walk this routeDevil's Spittleful in the Rifle Range Nature Reserve is particularly stunning. Near the beginning you have to double back from the exit off the canal as the route goes over a private bridge and housing estate - just take the bridge over the canal by Tesco, turn left along Park Lane until you come to the park on the right and then you're back on the route....
Sue MacAskill
The walk out of Kidderminster is typically tricky to navigate in places, as is the off-road walking between Shatterford and Alveley, which is partly poorly way marked. A better sub-route may be to pass through the Severn Valley Country Park to access the River Severn crossing rather than to walk through Alveley Industrial Estate....

However, for the portion of the route out of Kidderminster, specifically at Kidderminster Golf Course, and between Dunclent and Mustow Green, associated waymarking signage regarding private property and trespassing can be intimidating....

There are quite good bus and rail transport links, two pubs and a shop in Blakedown which is about half-way and at both ends of the walk, in Hagley and in Kidderminster, there are many shops, cafes, pubs and a greater selection of rail and bus links....

The plotting suggest a non-existent footpath, this caused us to turn right from the route and look for it, rather than turning left and following the right of way....
David Sanderson
Reaching the other end you enter Hurcott Lane which is a narrow lane with no pavement. The village itself is still along the busy A456 but does offer numerous stopping options as well as links to bus routes and the railway station which has trains to Worcester, Birmingham, Solihull and Stratford upon Avon. The section of pavement beyond the end of the village is probably the least enjoyable section of the walk, but the benefits of the village compensate for that. The section through to the meeting point by the railway station is mainly residential and does not offer much in the way of interest, but there are plenty of stops and shops on the other side of the park from the end of the walk....

Walk this routeThe alternative I took was to go north on the minor road to Waggon Lane, turn right then right again at the bridleway to rejoin the route at Churchill Lane....

A big climb out of Kinver onto Kinver Edge is rewarded with excellent views to the west. An easy-to-follow walk along the edge before dropping down on paths to the canal. A pleasant walk then into Kidderminster along the towpath....

Easy to follow, easy to walk, safe and a pleasant walk along the towpath. Accessible wheeled as well....

The route out of Kidderminster towards Mustow Green is clearly posted, however local notices warning of adjacent private land ownership could be considered as intimidating. The remaining route is delightful with a mix ox of woodland and field walking with some impressive views....

The route is easy to follow, there is a small section along a country lane, other than that it is fields, canal, forest paths....

This is a delightful stroll beside the Blakedown Brook from Kidderminster through the villages of Blakedown and Churchill to Hagley. The route generally follows the travel corridor, parallel to the railway line towards Birmingham. The proposed route from Perriford Lane to Blakedown is private property and requires an alternative route....

This route commences with a pleasant riverside walk downstream along the River Severn before gently rising up through the heathland of the Devil’s Spittleful, to then drop down into the streets of Kidderminster, with a short stroll along the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal....

The route is very accessible with readily available public transport links at either end. The downloaded route is accurate....
