Help connect Ilfracombe
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Ilfracombe’s Slow Ways.

I agree with both reviewers of this route, Quite spectacular, stunning views but be prepared for a tough hilly walk....

Views, streams, fragments of rainforest, goats and so many rainbows! Highly recommended!...

I absolutely loved walking this route. It's got incredible views, gorgeous paths and we lucked out with lots of goats too....

Walk this routeI really enjoyed the deep and old holloways, a few of which were also streams on the day we walked this route. I think another good route option could duck into the middle of Combe Martin. I'd 100% recommend this route and walk it again....

This route is scenic and some interesting animals are encountered - a wild boar farm and further on are alpacas. There are a couple steep climbs, but this gives a chance to stop and take in the views. A welcome pub at West Down is under new ownership and is open for longer hours....
Linda McCarthy
From Barnstaple direction it makes it easier to go under the tunnel and from Ilfracombe stay on the footpath all the way to the tunnel - as the cycleway is on a higher level you dont need to use it....
Tim Ryan
Then the route heads towards Combe Martin and sea views. Combe Martin is roughly half way, and the route passes The Pack of Cards pub, as it cuts across town. The first being between Combe Martin and Berrynarbor....

It is hilly and strenous, but the hard work is really worth it for the views and the quiet countryside you get to walk through. I walked from Ilfracombe to Barnstaple and the route starts off using the coast path, before heading inland through woodland in Langleigh and Slade, passing the Slade reservoirs and heading up to Mullacott via the Alpaca farm. After that there is a lot of lane walking to Cheglinch then West Down, but they are so quiet, I didn't come across any vehicles. From West Down there is a really nice section along a track through woodland and along coombes, before again using very quiet lanes through Fullabrook wind farm....

This route has sections of walking along Old Barnstaple Road which is too busy to walk along safely, especially in the summer. There is also a short section along the A361 at Heddon Mill which is very dangerous, although this could be avoided by choosing the southern lane....

But some lovely views and overall a great walk although unsuitable for wheels....

The beginning of the route getting from the seafront up to the old railway line is particularly ugly, going through narrow high walled alleyways, strewn with litter and decay. The next 3.5 miles is along the former railway line, now converted to a traffic free cycle/pathway....

Walk this routeThe entire route is along the Coast Path national trail, no reason to change it. Some big climbs along the trail....

The route from Ilfracombe to Lynmouth for the most part follows the coast path, with dramatic views over the North Devon coastline....

Walk this routeDo not attempt to follow this route where it goes along the B3230. The road is busy, typically narrow (this is Devon) and there is no path. It is dangerous....
