Help connect Huntingdon
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Huntingdon’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates
There were a few narrow paths as the route skimmed into Aversley Wood, but mostly field side grassy paths. The fields had been harvested and, all bar one, the paths were clear, the paths are sign posted both on the ground and on the map, navigation is straightforward. Narrow paths and bridges, stiles, kissing gates....
Strider
The 'road safety issue' mentioned by the previous reviewer is probably as the route goes through dense impenetrable hedges onto a busy road ie no path. I have walked and redrawn the route around the other side of a roundabout where there are paths....
Strider
But you're soon out next to the river, then across through narrow passages past Little Paxton. The path is varied, from wide gritted paths to narrow paths ducking under trees and stepping over branches. Portholme Common is flat grassland with some standing water....

Strider added Stnhun two, a new walk from St Neots to Huntingdon
Walk this routeThe route starts with a decent mix of footpaths, back streets and then a long straight road to the edge of Huntingdon. Then there is a long road to the village of Kings Ripton....
Philip Le Marquand
I tend to agree with the comments about the Huntingdon end of the route though the street section wasn't too bad. The path had been maintained when I walked....
Philip Le Marquand
It is possible to access Thicketroad directly from Mll Street or through the caravan park. The river section can be impassable in wet weather understandably....
RichardRoberts
It is grassy across Portholme Meadow with the potential to be very muddy if there has been a lot of rain. There are gates on the route. It is mostly flat....
Susan
We got a bit lost amongst the lakes to the east of Huntingdon, straying slightly from the route, but this was not a major problem....

Short and sweet walk across the vast Portholme meadow to Godmanchester. Enjoyable walk with a couple of gates to open and long grass in meadow it would only be suitable for off road wheels....
Avoid the walk along the Buckden Road out of Huntingdon and follow the great Ouse Valley Way out of Huntingdon and also past Little Paxton. I stopped at the Paxton Pits reserve cafe for a lovely cup of tea and refill my water bottle! Lots of kissing gates so not suitable for wheels....
On the farmland sections the path is generally clear but disappears in some fields - the map however shows the way....
DENNIS ROBERTS
Lovely walk along the Ouse but would be better to follow the Ouse Valley Way along the entire route rather than following the road at the Huntingdon end - the road is busy and has to be crossed twice whereas the OVW stays on paths and enters Huntingdon via Mill Common straight to the bus station. If going to the Visitor Centre at Paxton Pits take the path in the Nature Reserve to the OVW rather than going through Little Paxton. The OVW is well waymarked ....
DENNIS ROBERTS
A very pleasant short walk across Portholme the largest water meadow in England. Well used by walkers with dogs....
DENNIS ROBERTS
An alternative start is to continue down Mill Common to Portholme and follow the Ouse Valley Way sign across Portholme to Godmanchester....
