Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

From Holborn station you cross over and soon turn left down Newton Street. As you approach Charing Cross itself the traffic gets busier, but overall a pleasant, enjoyable and interesting walk....
J M
A really enjoyable walk, which packs a lot into a short distance. Generally avoids busy ways but maintains interest throughout. Full marks!...
David Sanderson
Started with a quick escape from traffic on The Strand with glimpses of the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery sandwiching a statue of Oscar Wilde; Maiden Lane; Southampton Street - walking boot retail mecca; a short taste of Covent Garden proper (Transport Museum and musical street entertainment just inside SE corner of the market building, plus obligatory swarming tourists but not as crowded as near Cov Gdn tube). A friendly street cleaner on Newton Road confirmed it is always very quiet, not just on Sundays....

Busy bustling, touristy, entertaining, shops, museums, distractions and the odd surprise. Reasonably direct and easy to navigate. A good city walk....
Strider
Someone has picked out some quiet roads and a peaceful historic park through one of the busiest parts of town, much more pleasant than you might expect. A good way to get between these two busy stations....

Walk this routeApart from either end of this route, it was very quiet, using mostly residential roads....
Mary Oz
Mostly this route was very busy with tourists, on a sunny Sunday in August, particularly around Covent Garden (where I made a detour to visit the London Transport Museum). There were a few quieter bits further north, including where I passed a shy little art deco cinema which was pointed out to me by someone photographing it. The route was all very nice, and also accessible....
Mary Oz
We then pass Brunswick Square before heading right along Handel Street to find the entrance of St George's Gardens, a former cemetery that is now a small park....
Hugh Hudson
The route takes is through back streets and mostly avoids the roads with heavy traffic, and is entirely on pavements....

Walk this routeConvent Garden can be very busy with people, so you can continue along Shelton Street, cross Long Acre and then use Garrick Street to avoid the biggest crowds....

Historic buildings, museums, squares, tiny quiet passages, a real slice of London, much of which without crowds....
Strider
Normally, I would stick to main roads and places I know, but this route takes you through some cut throughs and paths that wouldn't normally catch your eye....

Walk this routeOur group ran this route together at approximately 7.30pm on a Monday evening (it was dark at the time). I can't fault this route- it was direct, and included some great sections in interesting neighbourhoods. Lloyd Baker Street is quite steep (we used to use this for hill reps at my local running group!), and Calthorpe Park is not open at this time in the evening....
Simon Fitzmaurice
Lovely route, passing London Bridge, St Paul's Cathedral and Paternoster Square. We ran this course as a group at night (Monday evening from 7pm). All well lit, but we did find that Warwick Passage and Lincoln's Inn Fields were both closed up....
Simon Fitzmaurice
Safe and direct with lots of potential stops. No steps or stiles. Very very easy to follow...

A special treat was Lamb's Conduit Street between Theobalds Road and Guildford Street, a lovely street lined with shops and restaurants....

Shortly after leaving Angel the route turns off St John Street towards Myddleton Square (second photo)....
Jane Taylor
We walked on a balmy September evening when everyone was outside all of the many historic London pubs, drinking pints under hanging baskets - very enjoyable!...
Hannah
It's such a narrow slice, if you did find it locked it's a tiny detour around the block. Super Slow Way - I will definitely use this to get around new time I'm in London....
Hannah
There's nothing wrong with it, and it's perfectly direct, pleasant, accessible, and safe....
mtormey
I've dinged it a star because I found the Pied Bull Yard, by the Holborn end, closed when I walked it, so the route isn't a 24 hour route!...
mtormey
I followed the line as drawn and climbed the stairs just before the Museum of London roundabout to get on the walkway above the road but had no problem following and enjoying the route otherwise....
mtormey
Some of the streets on the Monument end felt a bit unwelcoming (I kept thinking, “man, is this right?” and it doesn’t help that gps doesn’t always work when surrounded by tall buildings!) but lo and behold they were always right....
mtormey
It goes past many fascinating parts of old London; the remains of London Wall, the Barbican, St Alban's Church, Brooke's Market, Smithfields, Salter's Garden and Finsbury Circus along with the new developments in the city....
Slow Ways Darren
Unfortunately Grays Inn is not accessible ‘out of hours’, and the entrance to the courtyards and gardens was locked. I’d say this route is for weekdays daytime only. I may put up a revised version, which would give an accessible all hours off-the-main-roads option....
Jane Taylor
The only problem I came across was that Warwick Passage, which is the route under the Old Bailey, was closed off with a locked gate and there was no sign to indicate what hours it is open....
porcovolente
Good route, but not completely follow-able as drawn. I'll upload a replacement (Holang three)....
mtormey
Every time I thought the route couldn't surprise me with more, there was another lovely street, or cut-through, or pocket park, or historic building....

Walk this routeThat said, I was nervous about this route, as it follows major roads the whole way!...
mtormey
There are plenty of other surprises - walking through the middle of Smithfield Market; the old Farringdon station entrance opposite the new Elizabeth line entrance; the market at Leather Lane; and Lincoln's Inn Fields for some green space....
Jane Taylor
It's not really clear from the route map, but when walking direction Holborn ---> Monument, at Farringdon Street the route turns left up a flight of stairs to a higher level traffic free area....
Jane Taylor
Not a lot to add to the other views - if you like the bustle of London, you'll love this one - I did!...
Martin McGovern
The route starts by turning off Oxford Street into Soho, and eventually arrives at Soho Square, before turning back to Oxford Street which it immediately crosses over. Hanway Street is a useful back street to know if you want to stay away from the crowds at Tottenham Court Road station; given its proximity to the big retail area, it remains quiet and surprisingly ungentrified....
Jane Taylor
A short and very pleasant walk from Euston to Holborn. Easy and safe to follow. Only difficulty is the crossing of Euston Road which is not sited at a pedestrian crossing and was a bit tricky....
David Sanderson
A no nonsense but thoroughly enjoyable route which follows Oxford Street for the vast majority of it....
David Sanderson
Jane Taylor added Oxfhol two, a new walk from Oxford Circus to Holborn
Walk this routeThe street choices mix up quieter backways with some of the main strips through Covent Garden, so expect many people, street performers, queues for cafes, and pavements blocked by all these things and, of course, delivery vehicles. Like any central London route, there is a high likelihood that some building work will be happening somewhere on the way. No hesitation recommending this one....
Jane Taylor
Really enjoyed walking this route in the evening- the best time to walk in central London in my opinion. No difficulties whatsoever- this would suit walkers and wheelers. Lots to see on the way....
Naami
It’s a nice touch, but just know the route is right when it feels like you’re turning away from the station building you can see directly in front of you!...
mtormey
I’m sure a quieter route exists, but for directness, you can’t go wrong with this one!...
mtormey
Nice route connecting Euston and Holborn. Options to cut through the squares for some greenery....
Liz
A perfectly great route connecting Charing Cross and Holborn. Great London walking. The area around Covent Garden can be pretty busy, especially in late-week evenings!...
mtormey
Still, it was too indirect for my liking, and it felt more like a meander than the most direct route between Holborn and Liverpool Street....
mtormey
I agree with the earlier reviewers - very pleasant walk through the University of London/UCL neighbourhood. Wheel-friendly too....
Martin McGovern
One thing to bear in mind is it's not a 24/7 route: it passes through some gardens that close at dusk; and there is a cut through a car park with a sign saying 'gates open 08.00 - 17.00'. The route passes a couple of green spaces - Queen Square, Brunswick Square Gardens - without going in, but of course they are there to be enjoyed if you want....
Jane Taylor

Walk this routeA really good route from Euston to Holborn which takes the quiet streets and goes through Russell Square and Bloomsbury Square....
LizMcBreen
This route goes along the traffic filled main roads such as High Holborn. As previous reviewer says there are definitely much quieter and pleasanter routes. Hopefully someone with local knowledge will create an alternative route....
LizMcBreen
This is a marvellous quiet route with a surprising amount of green space for such a central location....

Walk this routeGood Slow Ways route that did a great job following quieter streets and connecting lovely squares. Definitely recommend going through instead of around these green oases! Overall an easy and very pleasant connection up to Euston....
mtormey
You're in busy Central London, so it's busy and vibrant the whole time! The area around LSE is under construction so navigating the pavement was a bit tricky, but no major diversions were required....
mtormey
An alternative could be created that uses some quieter and cleaner streets....
danravenellison
I agree with the two previous reviewers, so I've uploaded Chahol two based on those comments....

Martin McGovern added Chahol two, a new walk from Charing Cross to Holborn
Walk this routeI agree with the previous reviewer - an interesting and meandering route along quieter streets. Building work at Smithfield is still going on (Sept 2021). Plenty of facilities and history either directly on the route or nearby....
Martin McGovern
This is a short city-centre route along larger streets. It's reasonably direct, and provides pleasant views of a number of London landmarks - the Monument and St Paul's Cathedral being the most obvious. Because the streets are larger, access is generally easier, with dropped kerbs ubiquitous....
Martin McGovern
As the other reviewer states, the Holbon End of this route could use some tweaking, and if you are heading to or from Waterloo, go through Victoria embankment gardens and up carting lane to connect with Covent Garden Market...
Henry
This route is ok but not great, better would be to incorporate a bit of Hatton gardens, Hatton Wall, Herbal Hill, Exmouth Market and Arlington Hill...
Henry
It does what it says on the tin - a straight forward way to get from Oxford Circus to Holborn station to avoid the tube....
Slow Ways Darren
If coming from Charing Cross, turn left at the end of Parker Street to walk up Kingsway and cross using the traffic lights outside Holborn station....
Largecj
Could shave a minute or two off the route using the path connecting Westfield and Cromer, missing out St George's Garden....
Largecj
This is an interesting and meandering route that keeps mainly to quiet back streets and passes close to three tube stations on route - Farringdon, Barbican and Moorgate, so useful for connecting to those....
