Latest Updates
The path leading off Brecon Road in Hirwaun to the mountain track was closed, due to works on the A465 Heads of the Valleys road. The right of way and the Slow Ways route go straight up the mountainside after leaving the gravel road just after the pylons, but there is no path as such, the slope is steep and the grass is long, so I chose to follow the wind turbine access road, which winds its way all the way up to the top of the mountain and down the other side. It`s a bit of a yomp from there for about 300 metres across boggy and tree stump strewn terrain to reach the access road for the recycling plant, but doable with care. The third point was where this route deviates from Hirmer 1, and the route goes down the lane and across a field footpath before emerging on the B4276 Merthyr Road. Walk this routeLeaving Merthyr and walking up a hillside withn a clear path makes this a far more pleasant walk than other slow ways routes in the area that take you over the top of the hills. Sadly there are access issues in woods on the Llwydcoed side and an alternative route will need to be created....

I elected to do this walk as opposed to Glyhir1 and Glyhir3 as it avoided the former open cast site just to the south of the main road leaving Hirwaun. On my earlier walk from Aberdare to Hirwaun (Hirabe1), although the reclamation of the site looks to be fairly advanced, there was still a lot of lorries on the site, so I decided on the road walk....

One slight question mark over the path from Nant Melyn farm onto the mountain, not sure I got the right way here and had to jump a fence. Great views from the top of the mountain though, right across to the peaks of the Brecon Beacons, and the walk along the mountainside before turning right and heading down into Hirwaun was very pleasant.
