As Philip says, it is an efficient and safe route but it is hardly pleasant. You're next to a busy road all the way with buildings on either side almost all the way. It is not a walk I would do again....

The field path from the balancing pond to Robin Lane was very overgrown and uneven underfoot so I couldn't see where I was putting my feet....

Although it is mainly through residential areas, it's mostly footpaths rather than roads. It's very short and a pleasant add on to other routes....

The route leads you into somone's vehicle storage yard which does not have access to the country park hence I have created Hetmur two. The rest of the route is fine and has some lovely stretches of park and countryside. Please see review and photos for Hetmur two...

The first part of the walk is through the relatively quiet streets to the outskirts of the town where you join a short section of footpath then take a right turn onto a shared cycle path....

This Slow Way takes a direct route between the two settlements, mostly on a shared-use footpath/cycleway along the dismantled Hetton Colliery Railway line, with additional sections on other rights-of-way and pavements....

The first 1/2 mile was fine as it was along the roads in West Rainton but when we turned onto the public path between 2 houses, it was totally overgrown due to the excessive rain recently experienced and weeds had grown in abundance (photo attached). Then a few yards along this road, turned right onto the public path. The path comes out onto a road in Hetton le Hole marked with a Sustrans milepost. There are buses going from Hetton Le Hole to West Rainton (though not on a Sunday!)...
