Help connect Heswall
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Heswall’s Slow Ways.

The walk takes you down to the Wirral Way and then along to Neston, taking a detour to walk along the front at Parkgate where there are pubs, coffee or tea shops, ice cream and fish and chips....

The walk takes you up to a monument at the top of the hill above West Kirby (a short section of steep steps) and then along through well walked paths, which I suspect would be muddy in winter, through wooded areas at highish level. After a while there is a car park for Thurstaston Hill and you can take respite for a short while by crossing the road to this and taking the path parallel to the main road, to rejoin it a little later. The walk then goes down a road without a path for a short while to the picturesque St Bartholemews Church and then along well walked clear paths and tracks at high level with occasional good views across the estuary to join the road after Oldfield farm....

After leaving the residential area of Heswall on the Deeside of the Wirral the route passes through flat fields to Barnston. The next section from Storeton Lane over Prenton Brook via leafy Barnston Dale to Thingwall is very pleasant and the Bassett Hound pub a handy place for food/drink. However the final third - past the enormous crematorium at Landican - is along a busy main road to the roundabout at Woodchurch....

The route left Heswall bus station along residential pavements to go along the wooded footpath edge of Whitfield Common, then crossed the road to a footpath tucked in next to a school....

Arthur Ramshaw added Weshes two, a new walk from West Kirby to Heswall
Walk this routeThe path is shared between pedestrians and cyclists so can be busy, but the path is wide enough not to cause many issues. After rain, mud can make some sections less accessible....

A good route with a rural midsection, which due to its terrain (often muddy), multiple stiles and gates, as well some short unpaved road sections, exclude all but foot traffic. Despite this, it is the best route in connecting the two locations....

Between two towns with good transport links and good pavements, there is a big chunk of countryside, often muddy, with gates and stiles which naturally excludes those using bicycles or wheelchairs, manual or motorised. That said, it is the best way of joining the two towns....

I concur with the other reviewers: the diversion down Boathouse Lane is mostly unnecessary unless you're going to the pub or into Parkgate for an ice cream! That said, it's a pleasant short coastal route on a path that mostly runs along the old railway of the Wirral Way, which is always a good walk....

Some sections are not accessible to wheelchairs, but the majority of it is along wide and flat paths, with amenities at either end....

I've amended the route slightly (HESWOO Two) to correct some odd footpath choices to make the route flow more naturally....

Hiking Historian added Heswoo two, a new walk from Heswall to Woodchurch
Walk this routeA good little walk, with a variety of "under-foot" conditions including Un-adopted roads, fields, disused railway and hidden urban routes, one suggestion though, when reaching the left turn off Wood Lane continue across Boathouse Lane past Backwood Farm/Hall to the Golf Course and turn left there on the footbath down to the Wirral Way, makes it a little more interesting. Great views across the Dee Estuary to Flint....
Dermot Byrne
The flight of steps that are on the route from the Heswall bus station side would be a wheelchair deterrent although there are not that many of them in the flight so shouldnt be an issue for any able bodied walkers. Good views as you get towards the marshes across to Wales. Stout shoes or boots recommended....

Wheelchair and pushchair users would need to find an alternative route from Heswall bus station down to the marshes....
