Help connect Haywards Heath
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Haywards Heath’s Slow Ways.

Changed my perception of the distance between these two places. A really enjoyable way to go....

It is used by many students who attend Warden Park and Haywards Heath College. The section through Blunts Wood is paved and lit....

Although the town sections around Haywards and burgess hill aren't particularly interesting , fox hill and junction road are especially difficult walking....

Walked this after a lot of rain in March and the bit near Theobald's bridleway was nearly impassable for about one kilometre, though I could appreciate it would be a fantastic route in the summer. Theobalds had a number of signs explaining the history and nature of the area which I enjoyed reading. The route is fairly road heavy at each end but there aren't loads of options between these two towns....

Really direct and scenic. Good under foot even after rain. Will defo use this route again....

Although there was a little bit of "road walking" in Burgess Hill, most of the route was through green spaces....

Having tried unsuccessfully to figure out an offroad route between these two settlements when I lived in Haywards Heath over twenty years ago. The route starting from Haywards Heath Station gets off the main road fairly quickly before using Clair Park and then a series of alleyways to cross Haywards Heath to South Road, which is the main shopping street....
David Sanderson
Starts along main roads and then heads out of the edge of Crawley as far as Tilgate Park where it heads left up the lane towards the golf club rather than entering the park. A gentle climb through open farmland leads to some lane walking down Crawley Lane which wasn't too busy and has a verge at the top....
David Sanderson
The short walk through Crawley takes you to Tilgate Forest which is very pretty....

Overall, I think it is a marginally better route from Ardingly Reservoir to West Hoathly. The route is quite strenuous, with ups and downs, mostly following footpaths and bridleways across small fields and through woodland....

Walk this routeAlong the path beside the railway to the High Bridge at Rocky Lane and the turn left along to the new roundabout. Take the straight ahead path until you reach the Theobalds Road bridle path (still muddy) and turn right. Head down the lane, under the railway embankment then turn left alongside the embankment to reach Leylands Road. Follow the path with the railway on your left to the end, then turn left across another railway bridge to emerge onto Junction Road opposite St. Turn right and head up Junction Road to the top of the hill, then turn right at the roundabout down past the Top House pub to Burgess Hill railway station....

Haywards Heath to Crawley via Cuckfield 29/10/2021 Leg One - CUCHAY Two. This is a route which is justifiably already snailed It’s a direct all-weather path with some nice views and mostly traffic-free....

This was just a poor timing of the day, but I had to return to the path/footpath intersection at 538804 , 135798 and take the footpath west across Saint Hill Farm (not clearly marked in the farm layout, so have confidence in your compass) to W Hoathly Road, follow the road south to 51.099594, -0.021536 (there's a small carpark area/sign back onto a field), and then head east back across the farm to 538758 , 135244, where there'll be a sign and you can rejoin the Slow Way/High Weald Landscape Trail going south. If it is still closed, I took the detour in which I walked along the south boundary of Giffard's Wood (it appears this is a common path as there's a vague route) - if you stick north of the "PRIVATE PROPERTY" signs whilst going east you'll be on the right track. It's a lengthy detour with a significant - if I'd known ahead of time that this section was blocked I think a better route might be to go south at Stone Hill House (following the Sussex Border Path, not the High Weald Landscape Trail), following to Bluebell Lane/Station Road, and then link back up to the original Slow Way via the instructions above. Picture 2-4: Detour 1 - start of detour, path at the end of Saint Hill Farm, end of detour Picture 6-8: Detour 2 - start of detour, path at the start of Bluebell Ln/Station Road, end of detour...

The route links Cuckfield to Haywards Heath with the majority of the route on pavements on averagely busy roads. From Cuckfield, the walk goes through a churchyard through a gate and along a slightly gravelly private road. The route through Blunts Wood is on a tarmac path with streetlights....
