Connect Hailsham with Slow Ways
We’re creating a network of walking routes that connect all of Britain’s towns, cities and national parks
more walks and reviews are needed to fully connect Hailsham to the verified network. Can you give a hike and help?

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Hailsham’s Slow Ways.

Once I reached the Pevensey Levels things were a little easier and much better maintained, although occasionally the stiles were a little overgrown! If the route were to be signposted a little better, especially with the edition of place names, and used more frequently it would be a good walk....
ShortLegsLongWalk
Impromptu walk from Hailsham to Polegate after the bus I wanted to catch didn't show up and I figured it would be quicker to walk! All along a well marked and well maintained cycle route. Easy 5* slow way....

There are some tricky sections, including a few stiles with no alternatives (e.g. crossing the train track) and some muddy sections with low overhanging branches....
Charlie Peverett
I cycled this route yesterday, which is cheating really. However it shows that the route is completely suitable for anybody on wheels end to end....

Care should be taken in Heathfield and Hailsham towns to follow the route, it doesn't follow the route signposted "Cuckoo Trail" in Heathfield but if you follow either those or the Slow Way you'll end up in the right place. There is a toilet, cafe and shop in Horam, about a third of the way along the route if walking south....

Finding your way out of Hailsham is ok, the footpath from The Diplocks to Diplocks Way could be more obvious and you have to cross the dual carriageway A22, which is not ideal. The footpath out of Ripe seems to have completely disappeared, the path appears to go through someone's garden, potentially the route could stay on the road instead. On the basis that there isn't really an alternative route between Hailsham and Lewes (there are very few footpaths east of Ringmer for some reason), I think this route is just about ok....

The first section to Ringmer and out along the Broyle was alright, with too much walking on pavements beside the road for my preference. From the Broyle, the next section across to Laughton Place and over to Ripe is quite agricultural with some footpaths cutting diagonally across fields rather than along the edges. Shops, pubs, and refreshments are available at Ringmer, Ripe and Upper Dicker....

The Cuckoo Trail is a well path, direct route between Polegate and Hailsham....
Steve Cleverdon
Very easy to follow, well sign posted and flat. Paved the entire way so should be fairly accessible for all. Very pretty scenery....
ShortLegsLongWalk
A very speedy and well paved route, easy to find and well signposted. Would recommend....

I walked a large section of this from Hailsham to Cooden Beach on 16th July. The route is along the top of the beach, across shingles at the start and finishing with the promenade at Bexhill....

This path follows the Cuckoo Trail, an old railway line which has been transformed into an all-weather, hard-surfaced path....
