Help connect Greenwich
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Greenwich’s Slow Ways.

I walked this route from Greenwich to Canada Water on a rather misty winters day. The route starts near the Cutty Sark and the early stages of the walk provides a rich background of architectural and memorial narrative to British naval history. It is the type of route that one should devote the whole day to, ignoring the distance, just meandering through history and enjoying the views of the River Thames....

A really enjoyable walk through a fascinating part of London. Some particularly amazing views across the city from the hills above Greenwich...

From Lewisham station we follow Station Road east to Lewisham Road, where we cross, go left a short distance and turn half right up the hill. Shooters Hill Road is quite busy, but considerate drivers made it easy to cross....

4 Sept 2024 - A lovely route, full of contrast from the hustle and bustle of Canary Wharf through to peaceful, water-side residential area of the Isle of Dogs, to the uniqueness of the Greenwich tunnel and then out to the splendour of the Cutty Sark and Greenwich village. We found no barriers to access, just a few places on the route (South Quay to Isle of Dogs) where tree roots were lifting the paving slabs - so a bit uneven....

Some poor uneven narrow paving but good for wheels....

Drizzly day but still a good walk even with limited views....

If the route seems a little indirect on occasion its because it avoids steps and is very well suited for wheelchairs....

I walked from Woolwich to Greenwich on a wet drizzly day, almost had the walk to myself....

But it does include the back view of St George's Church (listed), the Ha Ha path beside Woolwich Common and G Park is always lovely. But at Greenwich Park it's a moderately steep choice compared to other options. Every other path down but one has a better view....

I had to mount the fence to help me get across this big body of water as i wasn't wearing water resistant shoes. Other than that, the scene varies from industrial warehouses to new apartment complexs to very cute tavern alleys closer to Greenwich....

Uphill past two churches to cross a busy road and past the MOD....

Starting from the base of the iconic One Canada Square, the route takes you immediately due south to a revolving door (photo 2) and through a short indoors section and out again to cross the beautiful South Quay Footbridge (photo 3). The route takes you along South Dock, and then south into West India & Millwall Docks (photos 4 & 5) before crossing the dock via the Dutch styled Glengall Bridge (photo 6). The route then follows a very brief (50m) section of road before crossing and entering into Millwall Park (photos 10 & 11) where my daughter was pleased to be distracted by a decent child's playground. From here it's a very short walk to the end of the route on Greenwich Church Street (photo 15)....

As previous reviewer said there is a bit of the Thames path closed by the Woolwich ferry but there is an easy enough detour. Would do this again!...
Dan Barron
The path used to get down/up the hill in Greenwich Park is one of the steepest ways to go through the Park but it has the best views and passes the Royal Observatory, the cafe and the coffee-hut, as well as a Meridian photo-op to be stood with one foot in the eastern hemisphere and one in the west....

Through the park it sticks to the paths where cycling is allowed, which makes this a better route than Grebla One if you're cycling. Very easy to navigate....

Greenwich town centre, Greenwich Park and Blackheath common are all very enjoyable....

Jane Taylor added Grebla two, a new walk from Greenwich to Blackheath
Walk this routeExcellent 5 star route connecting Greenwich to Blackheath. I made this route to correct errors with Grebla One, especially the misrouting at the hill in Greenwich Park....
Jane Taylor
In fact most of the route is busy because of the popularity of the Greenwich area with tourists but there is still plenty of room to walk and worth it for the views....

Coming from Greenwich it looks like there is no easy crossing point for the busy A2 but when you get close you will see a Pelican Crossing to your right. Plenty of greenery on the whole route for central London and obviously no shortage of places to get food and drink at either end plus good transport links....

A good route but it goes a bit off piste in Greenwich Park, involves climbing over fences into a grassy area on the hill up to the observatory. See photos of fence (no gate) with grassy area behind. I’ll remake as Grebla Two, which keeps all the good bits, and corrects the routing up/down the hill to follow official paths and not climb over fences!...
Jane Taylor
There is one section just east of the Thames Barrier which is technically only open between 6am and 9pm. * The Thames Path has been diverted for a building project at Mast Quay, just west of the Woolwich Ferry....

Starting from the Cutty Sark in Greenwich, which I last visited on a school trip 40 years ago, the route takes you down the steps into Greenwich Foot Tunnel (there is a lift option to avoid the steps)....
David Sanderson
An enjoyable, safe and easy to follow route which uses Lewisham Hill and Greenwich Park. Really nice views, with hill climbing involved. Good access....
Tim Ryan
It's a relaxing mixture of quiet back streets, Thames Path, green and blue spaces before arriving in historic, bustling Greenwich....
Intrepid Rabbit
Most of it is along the Thames Path but cuts out the Greenwich Peninsula, making the journey quite a bit shorter. The roads through Woolwich at the end are mainly pedestrianised....

The only thing to consider is that the park closes at dusk, so in the winter that section of the walk won't be possible in the evenings....

I walked this as part of a circular walk combined with Lewbla and Grebla and it was really nice to see so much of the heath. For most of this stretch across the heath there is no pavement (see photos), only a narrow track or gravel - fine for walking, but might be more challenging for wheels. The path in the park is very steep, so you could use The Avenue (parallel) for a slightly gentler incline....

Very pleasant route through the docks in Rotherhithe and along the river. Mostly traffic free....
Charles Hedley
An easy and direct route that crosses Blackheath and Greenwich Park in a fairly straight line before descending into Greenwich. Worth it alone for the view from the park. The suggested route goes through Greenwich Market, which is often busy, but has lots of food stalls and others selling various sorts of merchandise....

The suggested route involves following two roads (Wat Tyler and Cade) that do not have pavements....

Andrew added Canagree two, a new walk from Canada Water to Greenwich
Walk this routeClose to Canada Water there are steps up to Surrey Quays Road which can be avoided with a simple detour around the Decathlon building (follow the lake past the Decathlon store entrance, turn left along the service road to rejoin the mapped route on Surrey Quays Road). The only busy main road is a short stretch along Evelyn Street - this can be avoided with a detour through Sayes Court Park (from Grove Street turn left into the park, follow the Thames Path signs ahead and right emerging into Sayes Court Street. Head straight on towards the main road, rejoining the mapped route at Prince Street)....

For the second two-thirds (between Greenland Dock and Greenwich), the route follows the Thames Path National Trail, and National Cycle Route 4, and is well signposted and waymarked....
