Connect Godalming with Slow Ways
We’re creating a network of walking routes that connect all of Britain’s towns, cities and national parks
more walks and reviews are needed to fully connect Godalming to the verified network. Can you give a hike and help?

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Godalming’s Slow Ways.

Walked this from Godalming to Guildford, not much more to add to previous reviews except that Hector's Bistro at the Farncombe lock is now closed due to the retirement of 'Hector' and The Manor Inn is closed and is to be refurbished by new owners, so it could be some time before that is re-opened. An easy level walk except for a sandy eroded section close to Guildford which needs care. At Guildford I took the alternate route to the right onto the road past the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre as I wasn't sure of the status of the last section....

At Tuesley there’s a new housing development where the path must have run before but you just carry on down the track and turn left around the edge of it1 I climbed over a gate and then at the other end realised another gate said it was a private track....

It’s an absolutely splendid route, mostly off road, mix of woodland and farm tracks. The loop around at Witley takes you by a pub and bus stops, I think it is good to keep in the route as part of the Slow Way ethos - it could be shorted out if wanted....

This is a very good route overall but … there is still an access problem, this time at Brook. I’ve made version Three which corrects the problem and makes a couple of improvement tweaks as well - recommend Hasgod Three! Photo shows where the route at Brook tries to go through someone’s garage and garden!...

Jane Taylor added Hasgod three, a new walk from Haslemere to Godalming
Walk this routeI found the approach to the station at Guildford traffic heavy, with some awkward crossing points - there are better low traffic ways to reach the towpath from the station; this could be put into a new version of the route in due course....

Numerous footpaths allow for slight variations on the route but this is a solid link from Godalming to Haslemere that is pleasant, not too taxing for walkers (IMO) and has train stations at both ends....

Slow Ways Cristie added Hasgod two, a new walk from Haslemere to Godalming
Walk this routeAs someone mentioned, the footpath to join the River is closed (this is March 2022), so I went on the A281 southwards and took the next footbridge to join the path. It is a very peaceful walk that should be suitable for most people, but there are a few muddy parts and one section that is not suitable for wheelchair users....

The route was mostly flat running along side the River Wey....

I enjoyed walking this route a lot; the scenery was lovely on the whole and it went through a couple of very pretty villages. The biggest downside is the length of time you have to walk along a road when going through The Sands. Also, there are quite a lot of wooded portions, which may make some lone walkers feel a bit unsafe....

There is a delightful bistro at the start of the walk and a pub/restaurant half way along with a children's playground in the garden. The scenery is stunning and there is much of interest along the way including narrow boats, locks, a pill box and lots of wildlife. Part of the route runs along the old railway line and much of the path is National Trust land....
Blackheath
A nice part of the world, this route passes through a good mix of countryside and villages whilst avoiding busy roads....

From Godalming into Guildford cross the bridge over a small weir and continue straight ahead in front of the Guildford Rowing Club to a tall bridge. Rather than continuing left as marked, cross the bridge to the A281 Millbrook. Take footpath to left of the theatre, cross the bridge at the lock and continue back to the route. Once the Millbrook bridge reopens, some wheeled users may still find the route has challenges....

(a) Godalming to Eashing: use route via River Wey footpath from Borough Road, end of Peperharow Road, footpath via Milton Wood to Hurtmore Bottom, then bridleway to Eashing....
