Connect Farnborough with Slow Ways
We’re creating a network of walking routes that connect all of Britain’s towns, cities and national parks
more walks and reviews are needed to fully connect Farnborough to the verified network. Can you give a hike and help?

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Farnborough’s Slow Ways.

This is a gentle straightforward walk, mostly along the canal towpath, with some residential streets at Frimley Green and Farnborough. Also, at Frimley Green the route is drawn to walk around the green on the roads, but there is a good direct footpath across the green which makes more sense and is nicer....

A pleasant route to get between Farnborough Main, Farnborough North and Ash Vale stations. This Slow Way out of Farnborough Main follows the standard walking route from Farnborough Main to Farnborough North as this is a common interchange. Exiting Frimley Green, you follow the road up and over the South Western Mainline, with a view up the line of the slightly overgrown brick aqueduct that carries the Basingstoke Canal over the railway. From Mytchett you're following the Basingstoke Canal Towpath all the way down to Ash Vale station....
flawton
An easy way of getting from Farnborough Main to North Camp or Ash Vale which I believe was entirely step-free - as long as you avoid the overgrown alternate route on the Blackwater Valley Path through the meadow and stick to the main route the whole way....
flawton
The military camp is nice wide, North Camp is residential, Aldershot and Farnborough are busy....
zoltan
Some busy roads to walk along but with footpaths....
Vicky Widlake
Once the route passes Frimley Green it joins Basingstoke canal towpath. I attach a photo warning about a potential closure of the route and a another one showing a quiet stretch of the route....
Petr Sadilek
My only concern would be crossing the railway lines in a foggy weather where one needs to rely on the sounds of approaching trains....
Petr Sadilek
The only spot where I was a bit uncertain was the sharp turn from Rectory Road in Farnborough. It is rather concealed....
Petr Sadilek
Frequently Waterlogged and muddy between coleford bridge road and kebur, virtually impassable...
David
The Church Path becomes very muddy so better stick to Highgate Lane to the A325 pedestrian crossing....
David
I have cycled this route many times. It is a good and safe option....
David
Obviously not the most direct route and in my opinion, given the Blackwater Valley Path runs along the very busy, polluted and noisy A331 there is very little advantage to using this. Better follow the pedestrian and cycle paths around the airfield, Shoe Lane and Basingstoke Canal if you are looking for greenspaces on your journey....
David
Great to get from one point to the other, but little of interest if wanting to get into nature. There is a longer but much more pleasant route along the A331....
Duffnut
I would use route one if time is allowed as this route mainly follows a busy main road (wide pavement with cycle lane on one side). It is not the easiest to cross the roundabout on Hawley lane as on one side the pedestrian is not traffic lights controlled....
v199629
Nice easy route that passes through a nature reserve and woodland area. Unfortunately the A331 is nearby and quite noisy. There are picnic tables in the woodland area and a Cafe (The Greedy Pig) and Tesco Express near Ash Vale railway station....
alandavidhenry
After walking along the footpath alongside the roads from Farnborough, the route crosses the A331 and passes the fishing lakes and through a quiet residential area to Frimley Green. From here the route was straight down the canal to Brookwood. Unfortunately after wet weather the canal towpath can bet quite muddy so take some waterproof footwear....
alandavidhenry
This route can be shortened slightly be either joining the canal at Guildford road or staying on the Canal if coming from Ash vale....
Duffnut
Does lose a star for road noise though the busy A331 runs alongside for most of the way. Quite an easy walk gentle hill near Farnborough station, but nothing to worry about....
Duffnut
It is the more 'nature' route between Farnborough and Ash Vale and a walk through the woods parallel to the canal is nice, the canal is nice too but is usually a bit busier especially with Saturday Morning park runs. There is a useful convenience shop at Frimley Green. It is not the shortest route, but I think the most enjoyable....
Duffnut
Route with some pleasant walking along the baskingstoke canal and Southwood woodland. There is a lot of walking beside roads....
Graham Field
This path has an accessibility route along the Blackwater Valley path, which is made up of generally compacted surface with some gravel in places. The route is generally level with some rises over the A331 road bridge and the approach to Frimley station. The Farnborough road can be crossed at a pedestrian crossing....
Graham Field
This route was walked from Blackwater Station to Farnborough Station, and follows part of the Blackwater Valley Path, before turning off into Farnborough....

Basically flat, a very pleasant walk, pavement at both ends and a section along the Blackwater Valley Route in the middle....
