Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Fairmilehead’s Slow Ways.

Can be made more direct by following the pavement alongside Burdiehouse road and passing under the bypass at the Straiton junction, then following the B702 into Loanhead, but this is along (busy) roads so not necessarily an improvement (but still better/safer than Failoa-one)....

The only thing I would change about the route is to use the pavements around the roundabout at the top of Morriswood Road in a clockwise direction. The route description says there are no pavements here but they do exist (see one of my uploaded attached photos)....

Walk this routeThe route finding was reasonably straightforward going this way provided you stick to the main track when you branch off before the old railway viaduct. You do need to be alert, however, as there are a number of informal paths that branch off. The part from Loanhead to Park Avenue is in attractive woodland....

It's a walk of two halves, with an access problem in the middle - surmountable, but you can't follow the plotted route for a bit. The first half of the route is along busy roads, and not very pleasant. From Fairemilehead, the route drops down the main road to the Lothianburn junction where one of Edinburgh's main access roads - the A702 - crosses its ring road - A720. After a brief return to busy main road walking, the route turns past Beeslack School and through Beeslack Wood. No harm done though, I rejoined the plotted route on to the Dalkeith to Penicuik cycle path, a delightful tarmaced trail beside the River North Esk. Shortly before Penicuik, the route turns away from the nice flat cycle path, and climbs an evil flight of steps into Penicuik centre....

Walking down Oxgangs Road wasn't entirely pleasant as it was so busy and if I wasn't following the route I would have cut through to one of the smaller streets. At the end of the road I jinked left onto the tarmacked path that leads past Pentland Primary School to the Braid Burn at Oxgangs and joins an excellent set of routes following the Braid Burn from Oxgangs all the way to Blackford Hill. At the junction across from Edinburgh Greenbank Parish Church the burn dives through an impressive looking culvert while the people route is a climb up to Comiston Road and a walk along Braidburn Terrace past the parish church to join the burn further on at the conveniently placed The Lodge Coffee House. After the Hermitage the route becomes more track than road but is still very accessible and winding through a steep craggy gully into the Hermitage of Braid and Blackford Hill Local Nature Reserve. This is a very accessible route with the exception of the climb on Blackford Hill, the only option I can see would be to go along Hermitage Drive and Midmar Drive instead of dropping down at the Lodge Coffee House, these do look like quiet roads....

I decided to walk Faledi two in a loop with Faledi one, walking Faledi one in reverse. Beyond the Observatory navigation down the far side of Blackford Hill heading towards the Braid Hills became a little tricky as there are a maze of paths but keeping an eye on my OS map app kept me heading in the right direction. Off the roads the paths were a little muddy that day, a sprinkling of snow was still on the ground, but I found my way down through the trees among chattering birdsong to the bridge across the Braid Burn....

Walk this routeThe planned route directs you down Park Avenue which becomes a potholed path (photo 4) to a private property as the sweeping path on the map that should take you to the cycle path to Roslin doesn’t exist....

Although, the bit beside the A703 may not be very pleasant due to the fast traffic, it is accessible whereas alternatives would be challenging for people who are not very mobile....

This is a well marked route into the city centre using as much off road paths as possible (and quite ingeniously)....

Path beside braid hills road is indeed muddy (shared with mountain bikes, ponies and joggers) but there is a pavement on the other side of the road, and it is a steep climb over blackford hill. Lovers Lane is curious but also very secluded with poor sightlines and might be a little scary (although easily avoided)....

This was a great walk which keeps you relatively high up as you skirt the Pentlands and does provide great views. Keep an eye on map as you go as there are many path choices to tempt you off in the wrong direction...

Chose this route as it took me along paths I'd never used. That long straight path through the Grange and Sciennes was a revelation. Really enjoyed the route...

I cut through a housing estate to the east of the route and joined Belwood Rd that way to rejoin the original route....

Cockmylane is a lovely tranquil departure from the busy Comiston Road, topped off by a pleasant wander through the Hermitage and Blackford Hill. Recommend the tea shop at the entrance to the Hermitage, lovely coffee and cake!...

Cut through into Buckstone and into Mortonhall is lovely and particularly love the alleyways through Marchmont missing out the worst of the streets....

grussell added Faiedi two, a new walk from Fairmilehead to Edinburgh
Walk this routeIf coming from Currie it is better to avoid Fairmilehead and follow Swanston Road to Oxgangs Road, thus avoiding some busy roads. Taking the first road right after the Fairmilehead crossroads into Fairmile Avenue then taking Caiystane Avenue and Caiystane Terrace before rejoining the route avoids the busy Oxgangs Road....

Points of interest include Swanston Cottage where Robert Louis Stevenson stayed and the white washed thatched cottages of Swanston although this requires a small deviation from the route....
