Help connect Drymen
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Drymen’s Slow Ways.

Walk this routeFor the roads at the Drymen start, and part of the wooded section, we had quite heavy rain, but the weather improved a lot after that, but still left the ground wet. Just north of that the plot and the OS Map show the route going into the woods east of the road, but in fact the WHW now follows the shore on a track separated from the road by a low wall....

After train delays getting to Alexandria, it was good that this was a very straightforward route with easy navigation and easy terrain for faster walking, although the tarmac was rather wearing on our feet....

Eventually, the plotted route joins the Drymen to Balmaha road and the pavement is followed all the way to Balmaha. The route thereafter is quite varied with lovely sections over rocky paths next to the loch, undulating, packed earth paths through woodland, pavements adjacent to the Balmaha - Rowardennan road and a few short sections along the road itself....

Review of route Alexandria - Drymen two (Aledry 2). The route begins at Alexandria train station but quickly heads out of the town and is soon entering open farmland....

However at the very start there is some bad marsh land which really slowed us down and makes it quite a tough start....

Conic Hill is a big climb but worth it (even on a very misty day) and Balmaha is a great place to stop for coffee and/or lunch....

Petr Sadilek added Aledry two, a new walk from Alexandria to Drymen
Walk this routeThe first third of the route is on quiet country roads and mostly follows the National cycle route 7. The next and longest section makes use of the John Muir's way. As the route approaches Strathblane, it veers off John Muir's way at one point - it is shown on the seventh photograph where you can see a small sign "campsite & cafe 500yards"....
Petr Sadilek
The main problem with this route is that it wants to follow the path of a disused railway approx. Searching for an alternative route, I picked the one to the left of the slowway rather than following the National cycle route 7. I should have taken the National cycle route 7 at Croftamie instead and join this slowway after 2km again....

Beautiful views from the top of conic hill and then lovely descent to the start of Loch Lomond....

The alternative to Conic Hill involves a lot of road walking and some of the facilities on both sides of the road were not very walker friendly....

Where the WHW leaves the road and goes across a field in an uphill diversion from the road just before Drymen, I regretted this and wished I had stayed on the road....

Conic hill was a highlight! Then down into the pub in Balmaha. Would definitely walk again!...

There is an error on the route between Burncrooks Reservoir and Lily Loch where the SlowWays route to Duncolm starts about 200m W of the true path on the ground, which is marked by a cairn. The true path goes SE of Lily Loch, but the SlowWays route shows as passing to the NW....
