Help connect Doune

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Doune’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates

First part from Doune is alongside busy A84 with lorries and coaches going past on narrow pavement, uneven in places. (CalDou Two avoids this part) Once off A84 route goes along quiet minor roads, across moorland and along old railway route. Not suitable for buggies/wheelchairs/bikes owing to locked gates....

Good walking route from Callendar to Doune along footpaths, old railway lines, minor roads and forest tracks. There are kissing gates and locked farm gates along this route so not fully accessible. Forest tracks are steep, narrow and slippy in places....

An alternative would be to take the forestry path through Drumvaich forest which would bring you out to rejoin the path further along (see map). There has been some disturbance of the path due to forestry vehicles when you leave Drumloist Road and it isn’t so obvious as to where the bridge is to cross Annet Burn....

Walk this route

It crosses the A820 and continues on a very good path. There is lovely scenery along the way....

The Carse lanes route described by one reviewer is along very quiet country lanes, is a good cycling route and is less than 1km further. But it is all on roads (no pavements) and walkers might find it a bit tedious. Going via Dunblane is only 2km further (via the Darn Road, 3km if via Glen Road)....

First section out of Doune on A84 isn't great for walkers, but the rest is very pleasant (NB: I've cycled not walked this)...

Walk this route

The B834 is not a walker friendly road - it is a 60mph road with no pavement and high hedges. An alternative route across the small lanes on the Carse is much better, and only requires a short stretch on the B834 - that's also the best way to cycle it. While a lot further, Bridge of Allan-Dunblane-Doune is a sensible alternative....

Walk this route

A decent enough walk apart from the final mile on a busy road with fast moving traffic. A couple of locked gates and rough ground in places make it unsuitable for wheelchairs or similar....

Walk this route

Farm track and disused railway line, well used, well maintained, safe, only one road crossing....
