Help connect Dorking
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Dorking’s Slow Ways.

It is incredibly hilly at times and there is one point where you have to walk on a main road but as a whole it is mostly paths/fields and woods....

Just stick to the cycle path and you’ll rejoin the route....

Keep an eye on route through Headley as easy to wander off main route!, Much of the walk is on all weather paths so not so much mud and only one stile! Toilets and snacks either at café opposite Burford Bridge hotel or pub at Westhumble....

I started at Horsley Station (June 2023) and used some quiet back paths to get to East Horsley centre....

Through Beare Green, the route is along a roadside pavement which continues beside the busy A24 for about 500m until just past the petrol station. That was the second lost pub I passed on the route from Horsham to Dorking. The route then takes you into Holmwood Common, an area criss-crossed with paths and trails where you can pretty much ramble where you like. You emerge from Holmwood Common by the church on the edge of North Holmwood. The route itself loses a star for me because of the road section around Beare Green and the confusion of paths through Holmwood Common....

This is a great route for those wanting a taste of of Surrey Hills without the crowds of Box or Leith Hill. Suitable for all levels of walker - further more it finishes with a pub at the end and a bus back to the beginning....
Russell Bodycomb
The route crossed the A24 a couple of times, both points with good visibility both ways....
Jonathan Hitchinson
A great walk to see the town and countryside views of Dorking and Capel. Some overgrown footpaths and a field with some inquisitive calves to be aware of but nothing to diminish the enjoyment of the walk! On the route you’ll walk on pavements, through alleyways, footpaths, commons, fields and railway crossings as well as over the A24....

Jonathan Hitchinson added Dorcap three, a new walk from Dorking to Capel
Walk this routeI started from Horsley Station (which needed an additional mile walk) and finished at Dorking Station (just under a mile extra)....

The Leech Lane (B2033) road walk in Headley can be avoided by using Tot Hill Lane and Tumber Street....

The route then continues towards Brockham (photo #5) where it crosses the River Mole on a bridle path. After going through a churchyard, the route continues along a footpath a little higher up from a "Road liable to flooding" (photo #8) before turning North on the quiet Sandy Lane. A slightly detoured around a very muddy field before crossing some fields and stiles to end up at the Park Pit lake, where the route then continued through Dungates Lane where loads of Golden Retrievers where watching my progress. From the Skimmington there is a muddy path (photo #11), first along Littleton Lane towards Reigate Park with its lake, before continuing towards Reigate along the busyish Park Lane....

From the station it is a short walk down the hill to walk along a busy-ish Dorking Road for a very short stretch. You come out of the copses (photo #5) along some houses to walk a short stretch again along the A25/Coast Hill (photo #6), before heading upwards towards Westcott Heath (photo #7). The route as drawn brings you down towards Coldharbour Lane and Falkland Road, but it's better to follow the Greensand Way along Nower Road and "The Struggle", as it avoids a busy (but short) section of road walking (photo #13)....

JohnMyerson added Easdor two, a new walk from East Horsley to Dorking
Walk this routeYou follow the Mole Gap Trail, the signs are stainless steel embedded in posts, bridges and even the road tarmac, very nice but hard to spot sometimes. The turning is marked in steel in the road tarmac, follow the sign not the map (see picture)....

Past Capel's beautiful church into fields, past Ruby's Café then along a busy road with a good pavement, Just past a petrol station (coffee!) there's a turn into more open fields. The station for Capel is at Ockley, just under 1km away, there is a footpath across fields from the dual carriageway crossing point to the church in Capel....

Unlike Dorhor 1, the section near Horley involves now very little road walking, with a stretch along the Mole and through some fields. The small sections where there was some road walking needed, it was either a short section, little traffic, or a good verge....

If you’re coming in by train then be aware that the start point is about a 20 minute walk from Dorking Station. After a short walk down some unpaved roads you slide into farmland and fields. There’s short village intermission and a slight section of main road the walk along before heading back into some more fields. The roar of the nearby A road becomes ever present as you pass over beautifully manicured playing fields....

The route begins at the church in East Horsley about 15 minutes from the train station on a pavement....

There was very little road walking (besides the first 2 miles near Horley), and where it was necessary, it was either short, little traffic, or a good verge....
Derick Rethans
I walked this on a warm overcast Saturday afternoon from Dorking to Leatherhead. It's a delightful walk along the river Mole and through Denby's wine estate. There are quite a few stiles, but the route, although it has some steep parts, is easy enough....
Derick Rethans
The path from Brittleware Farm to Wrstwsrd farm was a footpath dumped with rubbish of all kinds and then through a field with an electric fence....

Picnic spot in the middle and a number of pubs near the route if you need a refreshment stop! Follows the Mole Gap Trail which is well signposted....

A lot of this route is through open fields, so in the winter/early spring might be quite muddy and slippery. Would recommend boots with good grip rather than trying to take alternatives. But there are some really nice parts to it that go through woodland and can offer some nice, open views....

When I did this (March 2022), it was not long after the UK had a string of storms that felled a number of trees, so there were a few trees that blocked the path, but mostly could be walked around....

These include Headley Heath, Box Hill and the River Mole. Box Hill has a viewpoint along the route which offers spectacular views of Dorking, Leith Hill, the Mole Valley, the Weald and both the North and (distantly) South Downs....

Geography aficionados will be interested to see a number of features on route, including the floodplain, meanders, and the severed, dried up remains of an oxbow lake (see picture, though I cannot verify the extent to which this landform has been managed I.e. is it natural or artificial)....
Smatticus1991
Watch the navigation where Sandy Lane meets Old Road near Wonham - need to go onto Old Road briefly otherwise it's easy to turn right up a private road by mistake....
patbrown1886
The start and end points are easily reachable by public transport and are good town centres with plenty of facilities; there are also three intermediate points along the route where you can stop at a pub; there are also shops and public transport in Brockham and Betchworth. The route isn't accessible to wheels as it includes some steep woodland sections and many stiles....
