Having tried and failed to walk Collud one, I compiled and walked this alternative. It is far easier, and takes in well defined bridlepaths and footpaths, whilst slightly further, it is significantly less stressful...

NOTE : A new restricted by way comes into legal use on 13/10/22 when a shorter route from SU 24428 51684 to SU 24422 51270 is available, this is route Tidcol three...

On leaving Lower Cadley the path continues on quiet country roads (but narrow in places) until reaching a narrow gap in a hedge, signposted as a footpath but easy to miss, and passing into a field. The path crosses the field straight towards Collingbourne Wood. According to the map it should have passed straight through the field, but there was no sign of this so we walked around the field to meet up with the bridleway running along the edge of Collingbourne Wood. On leaving the wood there is a map error – the footpath is meant to turn left through the middle of a field to reach some farm buildings but no path was visible. Instead we walked on to the field boundary where there was a definite path to the farm buildings...

It loses one star as the start, as published, involves walking on a narrow A-road, winding through the village with no footpath for 200yds....

Big problems with this one, the half of the route closest to Ludgershall is good, although likely to be muddy in the winter. The northern half (from where it leaves the edge of the woods) doesn't seem to exist anymore, no gaps in crop on field, gates wired shut, totally overgrown. Diversion to the east is long and not without issues....
