Help connect Colchester
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Colchester’s Slow Ways.

Apart from the access issue with overgrowth, this is a very good route. Some paths have been ploughed and require some care to pass the overturned soil...

Pictures attached show gate and overgrown footpath entrance, however walk 100 yards more and a pleasant estate road takes you to a well signposted footpath to later rejoin the original route. Turn left and follow the footpath for half a mile until you join the Boxted Road and a bridge crossing. Alternatively follow Brick Kiln Lane as originally planned and continue on the Essex Way to Armoury Road and to West Bergholt (Essex Way signs all the way).Turn left onto B1508 and stay on footpath through Braiswick into Colchester....

Nice scenery out of the town and good paths along the way no issues getting through the fields or the woods a nice walk today...

This route from Colchester to Tiptree is straight forward, easy to follow and takes you through changing landscapes....
Jenn Phillips
Nice route and some nice green woodland and fields once you get out of Colchester the route was easy to follow and some nice points of interest. Pretty flat going and the paths were easy enough to follow...
Michael Morgan
Suggest ignoring this and taking the westbound public footpath then the quiet Stockhouse Road and Haynes Green Road and rejoining the route on the southbound public footpath across the fields to Grove Road, Tiptree. At Grove Road, the route alignment of the SlowWays map is unhelpful and seems to propose an unnecessary road route. Follow this into New Road and arrive at the route end on Church Road, Tiptree....
James Piers Taylor
Nice places to eat or drink on route are the Queens Head West Bergholt, The Shoulder of Mutton cafe Ford Street and The Swan Chappel....
Clive
Leaving Colchester up the hill through the High Woods Country Park was lovely to look back over the city before we immersed ourselves in the winding woodland paths....

The trip was a wonderful walk, with a great variety of landscapes and surfaces. Could potentially be muddy when wet weather, but overall a good footpath. There are some difficulties as explained by previous reviewer Thom Brisco....

The route’s major challenge is a stretch that passes right through the middle of Crown Quarry to the west of Ardleigh....

(There's a bus that runs between Halstead and Colchester every half hour on weekdays, stopping at each of the villages, if you can't manage the whole route). The route as shown through the industrial estate can't be taken, as the estate is surrounded by a fence so you can't access it from the pathway, and the old railway line becomes impassable at this point....

Footpath on Colchester side of this is currently closed (Autumn 2022) because of building works. No estimate given locally for reopening....

The route starts from Wivenhoe rail station and the first section follows a path along the River Colne, passing through a nature reserve. Towards the end of the route I had to improvise slightly at the car park when the prescribed route could not be accessed....

The path from Brook Street railway tunnel to the Moors can be overgrown at times. I propose an diversion along the north bank of the Colne, croosing to Spurgeon Street to reach St Leonards Church...

The path between Crown Lane North and Wick Lane goes through the middle of a quarry and is steep and very rutted on the south side and equally steep but loose shingle on the north side....
