Help connect Codsall
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Codsall’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates
Over half is alongside the canal, plus some nice off-road footpaths, which made it very pleasant. Also to be aware of: when joining the canal, the Codwol1 route indicates the right hand side of the road, whereas canal access is only from the left hand side, meaning you go directly under the road bridge to start the towpath section....
Marion Burns
Generally a great route although a couple of sections on road without footpaths and a little more traffic than would have been ideal. Otherwise the route uses a lot of the Monarchs Way, which is well signed....
Ian Pincher
The Staffordshire Way leaves us to head north along the Shropshire Union canal, and we stay on the lane and follow streets out to the east side of Brewood. The lane beyond (Tinkers Lane) is surprisingly busy, the worst bit of road walking on the route. From the junction of Somerford Lane and Tinkers Lane, a dilapidated stile takes us into a field subdivided into horse pastures, where there was no sign of any path infrastructure or any sign of a gap, stile or hurdle in the fences, so I retreated and used the farm drive slightly further north instead, passing a group of locals who ignored me rather than questioning what I was doing, so I suspect that most local walkers now use the drive. The path across to Crateford Lane is visible enough to follow, and the lane itself is quiet....
Hugh Hudson
There are steps (avoidable by going slightly further north and doubling back) up to Pendeford Mill Lane, which has a good wide pavement all the way into Bilbrook, where we pass two shops. A mixture of alleyways and back streets takes us to the junction on the edge of Codsall, where there are pelican crossings, and we continue on Wolverhampton Road apart from a pleasant detour through the Wheel Field Park, then go left down Station Road to the station meeting point. The centre of Codsall was full of water engineers doing battle with the mains yesterday, which meant that Station Road was the wettest place on the walk!)....

The only section I might have changed would be in Brewood, where it stops following the Staffordshire Way....
David Sanderson
The bulk of the route is along the canal towpath, and the routes at either end worked fine....

Walk this routeThere had been a bridge strike just as we reached the section alongside the motorway (Bridge 81 Otherton Lane) but this will no doubt be repaired shortly. The road at OS Grid Ref: SJ 90391 09312 was completely flooded, but we managed to edge along the embankment and stay dry....
Mary Oz
I’ve corrected this on CodPen Two, by staying on the canal longer anyway and also not having to walk alongside the busy A449....
Mary Oz
The route follows the cycle path on the towpath, rather than the Staffordshire Way, which runs parallel on the other side of a fence. The route requires you rejoin the Staffordshire Way where there is no join....
David Sanderson
Nice walk some paths weren’t there but easily sorted would do the walk again, but with so many more routes to chose from maybe a while...
Annette Sandel
There was obviously a recent diversion on the Monarch's Way between Beckbury and Heath House Farm that was waymarked but is not on the current OS online mapping....
Naomi Wrighton
Walk from Codsall through Albrighton very road heavy though small section of fields easily followed. Walk from Albrighton to Beckbury on pleasant country lanes, amd Beckbury has a nice community shop that was open when we walked through....

Walk along the canal in Penkridge is a nice start if a bit of road noise from the M6....

I personally prefer quiet walks, so didn’t enjoy sections walking along main roads, and there is also a short section that follows a very busy but narrow country road that I did not feel safe to walk on....
