This was the third and last of three Slow Ways that I walked in a day around Burnley just before Christmas. Finishing at Burnley Central Station wasn't great, and it would be better to bail out to the bus station for transport out of town....

Its access road led me in the rain to Park Road, which in turn led me to the main road through Cliviger....

The route started from Cliviger with 1.1m/1.8k along the pavement of the main road. The route through the woods and down over a footbridge was slightly difficult to find through long grass at some points, but it was waymarked. Then approaching the substation for the wind turbines, there was an obvious wall to follow, and the path started to become much clearer. Eventually I started the descent past some farm buildings, and then along a well signposted and well trodden path through the grass, and steeply down to some houses at Portsmouth....

This stretch of the walk is straight with Townley Hall on the left hand side and local park accessories such as an ice cream van and a children's’ playground....

At that point it goes into fields slightly rising until reaching another B road, crossing this with new housing on the right hand side of the path....

Eventually we left the park and crossed the road, via a pelican crossing, and headed along a straight, commercial then residential road. Access to the towpath was via a slightly steep slope on the north side of the road, after crossing the bridge. After the embankment, the route continued on the towpath right round to the far side of Thompson Park, and up a slope into Thursby Gardens and on to the station. I think this could have been shortened by entering Thompson Park earlier from the towpath....

There was a bench tucked in next to Salterford Bridge, and soon after this we found the short footpath through the woods and into the fields. There were stiles either side of the road crossing, and then new housing had changed the nature of the next footpath, but it was still quite possible....

We walked about 60% of this route, starting from Todmorden, before giving up, partly due to the extreme heat that day, but also because we were encountering difficulties in the track by this stage. We ended up backtracking and climbing over a gate into a field where we followed what looked like a fairly well-used bit of footpath nearer to the railway line, until we rejoined the plotted route soon after. It was at this point, with the prospect of more steep, rough climbing, in the extreme heat, that we called it a day....
