Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Clapham Junction’s Slow Ways.

There were some tree surgeons and road sweepers keeping things neat and a number of other pedestrians along the way....

As noted, this is a very practical route - probably one of the most direct of all Slow Ways, though less green than its Earcla two sibling. There are shops at each end, but solely residential in the middle, but with a route of this length, that's not really a problem. And the quiet roads make it suitable even for nervous cyclists....
Martin McGovern
Not a lot to add to the two very thorough reviews already posted - I agree with them both....
Martin McGovern
A pleasant walk along wide quiet and leafy streets....

After leaving Clapham Junction I was soon onto quiet residential streets with lovely old terraced housing from 1873....

One suggestion - if you are walking down Magdalen Road - it is a very long fairly standard residential road, if Wandsworth Cemetery is open you can pop into there and walk parallel to the road for a stretch which is a little more pleasant....
Philip Sparks
Crossing Trinity Road can be tricky, it's a very busy road. Also it's not that easy to spot the small dirt track across Wandsworth Common....
Philip Sparks
Most of the route is along footpaths or quiet residential streets through a leafy local authority housing estate. A pleasant route with no issues....

I did get a bit confsrd trying to find the route to walk under the train track. Battersea park was lovely as was the walk over the Thames....

Majority on pavement so it was nice to change it up when going through Wandsworth Common....

You first pass by "The Grand" (photo #1), a lovely building housing a nightclub, before being able to peek over the wall to see Clapham Junction station (photo #2). Then there was a long down road towards the Thames (photo #3), around Plantation Wharf and some more lovely buildings (photo #4)....
Derick Rethans
Shillington Park was lovely too, and there was a lovely footpath along side some houses (photo #5), and finishing on the south side of the tunnels underneath the railways (photo #6)....

Nice easy to follow route. Couple of road crossings...

Turn off Trinity Road at crossing lights to join surfaced cycle track towards railway bridge....

The first half is practically one long inclined roadside pavement walk, on the positive side it is wide, smooth and there are some interesting shops along the way, good for wheels....
Strider
Good route, mostly quiet roads and some green spaces. Recommend....
Jane Taylor
A pleasant walk with a surprising amount of green off-road walking for the area. Wandsworth Common and its lake are a highlight. I might be cautious of doing the off-road sections at night on my own....
Luke Reader
A really nice route that mainly goes through Wandsworth Common which is a great open park with some nice trials around the outside. At the Balham end, the streets are quiet and pleasant to walk down...

After turning off the common you walk through some very nice streets before a long gradual hill which is pleasant to walk along....

Worth the extra bit of distance to follow the river along a very nice stretch (apart from going round the Refuse centre). A short and green section through the park as well. The walk up Putney High street is only short and means passing many shops and cages etc....

I also walked Clabat 2, and I think I might prefer that route, but this one is just fine as well!...

I was overall quite pleased with this route, and proabably prefer it to Clabat 1....

Partly follows the Capital Ring, best mostly off-road route....

I really enjoyed walking this route from Clapham Junction to my hometown of Tooting with fellow Slow wayers. The walk through Wandsworth Common was especially pleasant. Tooting High street is a wonderland when it comes to resturants and cafes!...
Saira
A much more enjoyable version of the walk, with the improvement of the crossing of Wandsworth Common, elminating the tricky road crossing on the Common, and the use of the main roads into Tooting, including the link with Tooting Bec tube station. The road sections are all on wide pavements. Direct, interesting, safe, easy to follow, links to transport and with a multitude of refreshment options at either end....

Mary Oz added Putcla four, a new walk from Putney to Clapham Junction
Walk this routeA route that goes through fairly busy parts of London, but since these are quite vibrant areas, it's expected and I'm not sure there are better alternatives. The Albert Bridge is a beautiful bridge, so it's quite nice to cross it before you go into Battersea Park. The crossing isn't great here, but once in the park, it is much better and more relaxing....
Ingrina
Urban roads leading to Wandsworth Common with a variety of trees including Service Trees (a favourite)....
Strider
The walk along Bolingbroke Grove was mostly alongside Wandsworth Common therefore pleasant, especially as the road wasn’t too busy. Crossing the Common on a tarmacked path away from the road was good....
Mary Oz
After the end of the park, it’s necessary to move inland slightly, following the Thames Path still, to cross footbridges over the River Wandle as it reaches the Thames. The path stays inland a bit longer as it skirts some new building and a refuse site (not smelly!) but soon returns to the river, only to leave it again to go around the Ship pub and under the Wandsworth Bridge....
Mary Oz
This is a pleasant route quiet urban roads to the Thames....
Strider
Overall, a great route I was really pleased with, just can't quite give it five stars!...
mtormey
Two out of four segments are really fantastic and two more are perfectly good for Slow Ways routes! First, leaving Clapham Junction to Wandsworth Common are really good streets with good pavements and pleasant walking....
mtormey
Lots of traffic on parts of this route but also lots of interesting diversions. Battersea Park is pleasant and some small diversions move the walker away from the traffic. Lots of blue plaques on the on the way to King’s Road....

David Sanderson added Clatoo two, a new walk from Clapham Junction to Tooting
Walk this routeI would suggest choosing one of the paths that goes towards the middle of the park and then runs diagonally back to the Clapham Junction corner. If you do follow the road, there is a dirt path just inside the park which is nicer than the pavement, although less accessible....
Dannyash
I thought it was an enjoyable walk which mainly follows the Thames Path....
Bostal Boy
It is a pretty direct route from A to B using quiet residential streets....
Bostal Boy
The route goes down St John's Hill then turns left along the A3027 which goes under the railway line by underpass. The route leaves the main road to go through Falcon Park which was a nice touch....
David Sanderson
I understand the reason for this from the point of view of having a quieter walk, but I felt like I missed the heart of Tooting and this version of the route misses the opportunity to connect with Tooting Bec tube station. Upon reaching Wandsworth Common, the route follows a wooded dirt track rather than a paved path....
David Sanderson
It is however an interesting and photogenic leisure walk, taking in Chelsea Football ground, Kings Road/Lots Road area, Chelsea Harbour, and a fair amount of riverside walking both north and south banks. There was a small diversion just before Wandsworth Bridge where the riverside path is closed temporarily due to development, but it is well signposted. If you want a more direct route between Fulham and Clapham Junction I recommend Fulcla Two....

Jane Taylor added Fulcla two, a new walk from Fulham to Clapham Junction
Walk this routeThe challenge is that the most direct route would follow a busy polluted road, so I have searched out a less direct but much more pleasant route which I think now works well. (A very direct route would continue along the main road, only for people with robust lungs who don't mind the traffic, I'm out on both counts). All in all I am pleased with this route, which fills the gap for a more direct Slow Way option in a very acceptable way....
Jane Taylor
My view is that the diversion isn't worth it - it involves walking the length of Putney High Street, one of the most polluted streets in London, and at the Clapham end a hill and more busy roads. In addition the routing at Wandsworth Bridge isn't accurate. imo the best of the three routes currently on offer between Putney and Clapham Junction is Putcla Three...
Jane Taylor
This route has many good features, but it is less than satisfactory because it follows the busy A3209 rather more than is necessary. For this reason I've remade it as Putcla Three, which I would recommend rather than this one....
Jane Taylor
Very direct, not unpleasant, the roads aren't super-busy. If you want to get from Clapham Junction to Earlsfield with no distractions this is the route....
Jane Taylor
The route follows the Capital Ring up Magdalen Road, and past Wandsworth Prison to Wandsworth Common....

Jane Taylor added Putcla three, a new walk from Putney to Clapham Junction
Walk this routeI set out to walk and review Putcla Two, it was going really well and set for 5 stars, but the section of the A3209 under the railway lines was so unpleasant I decided to find an alternative route which restores the 5 star status, and review that instead - so here it is, and thanks to the maker of Putcla Two for making most of this one too. I found this route satisfyingly direct, surprisingly quiet (with a couple of short exceptions, not bad for this part of London), and the excellent refreshments at Wandsworth Town were very welcome. Top marks from me....
Jane Taylor
The portion through Battersea Park is a pleasant leafy stroll, though autumn colours are showing. There are a couple of pubs on the South side of the river, but they were all closed until mid-afternoon....
windsandandstars
A surprisingly pleasant walk for urban street walking, apart from the busy main roads at the two ends. In between it follows quiet and tree-lined residential streets of mainly 2-storey Victorian terraced houses. The short dog-leg in the path shown just before the end of the route is easy to miss, but it only saves about 100m of walking along the road so does not really matter....
David Livesley
However, rather than walking along the busy road at the side of Clapham Common, a more pleasant and only marginally longer route is to follow the path to the bandstand in the centre of the common (tarmac, so still a hard smooth surface), and from there the similar path to the far corner of the common. The route as specified is entirely on pavements, and the only obstacles would be the curbs at road crossings....
David Livesley
A pleasant walk, largely on tree-lined paths across Wandsworth Common, past the lake....

Walk this routeThis is a good route which is quite direct and takes in the expanse of Wandsworth Common. There is a sharp gradient to cross the railway bridge in the common....

Route is direct and decent although can be a bit uninspiring along Earlsfield Road....
