Help connect Chorley
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Chorley’s Slow Ways.

This is an interesting section of the Leeds-Liverpool canal....

An old bus doubled up as a cafe on the opposite side and a birch tree was growing in the canal around a canal boat which presumably was out of action ( the boat not the tree)....

A lovely, interesting route using the towpath of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal as far as possible. At this point there is the very short remnant of where the Lancaster Canal originally joined the Leeds and Liverpool....
Mary Oz
Access was via three steps, a cobbled slope, and an A-frame cycle barrier....

The towpath is wider along this section, and I felt safe on my bike passing dog walkers etc....

In fact the OS marked paths don't necessarily exist on the ground at all. Don’t expect views from this route over Healey Nab – just enjoy the woods....

Mr Neil Hartley added Chobel two, a new walk from Chorley to Belmont
Walk this routeBeyond the motorway the route shown turns left off the quiet road and heads through woods that can become a bit misleading and will get muddy. Steep climb up the road and then back onto a good sheep track at the very top of the road....
Mr Neil Hartley
Becomes more of a hiking route as is progresses to cross Park Hall Road (very narrow due to overgrowth where the route crosses the railway line with lots of stiles etc to climb over....
Mr Neil Hartley
Quiet roads from Chorley towards the canal, only crossing one busier road which wasn't a problem. Towpath surface very walkable and ok for a bike. Quiet and away from traffic, safe, would walk again so 5 stars...
Mr Neil Hartley
Passed my 2 nice pubs, lovely setting, The Malthouse, a lovely place to grab a pint or eat....

When I was hiking I did catch myself thinking "I wouldn't come this way", especially the bit through Spring Wood. Quite overgrown & muddy but still straight forward enough and there is the option to stay on the 'metalled road' (footpath)....

I know this area reasonably well being a local and the footpath inspector!...

(There were hints of muddy patches which I suppose could be worse in bad weather, otherwise ordinary shoes or trainers would be fine.) Most of the roads used are quiet residential roads, and there are also some off-road cycle tracks. I can’t imagine that there is a much better route to connect these two locations....

It is easy to miss the point where the Slow Way leaves the main park route, but there is a junction with a bin, and you very shortly cross a river on a wooden bridge. A short section of main road (with an island to help you cross) leads to some quieter roads, including an easy-to-miss footpath along a fenced-in field-edge....

It's all using the footpaths through (the more quite part of) Chorley, but still quite busy at times with people, traffic on roads, passing houses, shops etc Not a scenic route, not my choice of a walk...

An easy-going pleasant route, 80% of which is along the Leeds-Liverpool Canal towpath, although perhaps this can get monotonous after a while when there isn’t much scenic variety. A few steep/stepped bits at bridges. An improvement to the route would keep you on the canal until The Top Lock Pub at Wheelton, rather than coming off sooner onto roads....
sasumner
Froom Street at the Chorley end was busy with trucks/vans due to the industrial area over the M61 bridge. Many mountain bike trails cross the nab woodland so it can be difficult to navigate through on the designated footpaths. Quiet country lanes take you into the idyllic hamlet of White Coppice....
sasumner
Nice route along the canal, some short sections will be pretty muddy in winter. Popular pub just as you get off the canal in Wheelton....
Bramble
Can get very muddy in parts. Steep hill up to the nab....
Bramble
Very little opportunity to get off road here, this is the best option for a direct route. Avoids busy main roads....
