Help connect Carlton
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Carlton’s Slow Ways.

Further up the path goes through two wooded sections and along field edges to reach the top of the hill above Lambley. We follow the pavement down to the edge of the village then take a rough lane then a path between fences to Main Street. A good slightly muddy field path takes us across to Lowdham church, and we follow Church Lane down to Lambley Lane, then follow the pavement round. We follow the road out to the old A612 (now unclassified, Highcross Hill which becomes Nottingham Road), then follow its pavement past the NTU Brackenhurst campus, use another short section of field path, then pass round the Leisure Centre and the Minster School and cross a recreation ground to reach the Minster churchyard and the Southwell meeting point....

Walk this routeWe turn left onto Edward Road, then use pelican crossings to cross Radcliffe Road and continue over Lady Bay Bridge. We turn left at Mile End Road, use pelican crossings to cross the A612 then turn right onto the imaginatively name First Avenue....

There is a Nottingham City transport bus stop outside Holme Pierrepont or Daleside Road if you need to cut your walk short. Just after the main vehicle entrance to Holme Pierrepont country park, the route takes a short muddy footpath towards the River Trent....

There was still water and mud along the way especially at pinch points but the paths are well walked and alongside the river it was an excellent wide grass corridor. The river here is brown and sluggish and perhaps runs deep having been prevented from further movement south by the mass of the Trent Hills. Meeting the road the care home was once the Ferry Inn and the spot remains a popular destination of visitors to the river. The path surface is good and shared with bikes and horses. We cut out a bend in the river along Trent Lane then back alongside, it's an exceptional walk over the meadow where cattle may been countered. The well used but in summer overgrown woodland path, could be avoided by an early link onto the road and I took to the floodbank which offers views towards Nottingham rather than winding around the many parked cars. No longer a ferry but still a very popular spot at what appears to be an all day pub.The path remains good alongside the outfall of the massive Stoke Bardolph sewage treatment works which I guess does a good job because the fast flowing water looked clear and had no unpleasant smell....

The general indirect route is inevitable to locate a river crossing. There is a bit of roadside walking at the old and new Fosse Way but this offers a safe crossing of the A46 and we are soon on a bridleway alongside but hidden from the Gunthorpe road. The general indirect route is inevitable to locate a river crossing and Gunthorpe is a good and interesting one with the remains of the old bridge and information about the current bridge which is fast approaching it's centenary. The path remains good alongside the outfall of the massive Stoke Bardolph sewage treatment works which I guess does a good job because the fast flowing water looked clear and had no unpleasant smell....

I walked from Bingham and after the wide open sports field the enclosed narrow path had fortunately for me been recently mown. The general indirect route is inevitable to locate a river crossing and Gunthorpe is a good and interesting one with the remains of the old bridge and information about the current bridge fast approaching it's centenary. The path surface is good and shared with bikes and horses. We cut out a bend in the river along Trent Lane then back alongside, it's an exceptional walk over the meadow where cattle may be encountered. The path remains good alongside the outfall of the massive Stoke Bardolph sewage treatment works which I guess does a good job because the fast flowing water looked clear and had no unpleasant smell....

I walked this route from Carlton. Leaving Bleasby the route is across farmland to reach the railway crossing (Bailey Crossing), where there are red/green lights to mark the passage of trains....

I have not walked this from end to end, but the Carlton end is mostly the same as the other route I walked and the Gunthorpe-Southwell route is mostly the same as my new SOUBIN 2 route which I walked today. So I can confirm that this route works, and it is (at least scenically) the best of the CARBIN routes. For more details and pictures, see my reviews of CARSOU 2 and SOUBIN 2....

There are facilities (shops & cafes) at Nottingham town centre, Netherfield town centre (near to Carlton railway station) and also at the retail park containing Smyths, Costa, Lidl which is on the south side of the ramped bridge over the active railway along Sneinton Greenway. The route follows pavements and pedestrian crossings through Nottingham town centre. This is another linear path that follows the active train line towards Carlton station, with access points at either end....

Hugh Hudson added Carsou three, a new walk from Carlton to Southwell (Notts)
Walk this routeLeaving Southwell is very straightforward, I found the footpath sign easily and walked to the path T-junction and walked uphill past the Minster School playing fields until I got to the first field. This part was a little tedious as I had to walk a very narrow path next to a high fence around a Motorhome sales site. A fork in the path (take the right path) let me straighten the path and avoid the oxbow in the river, taking me to the second pub, the Ferry Boat Inn at Stoke Bardolph. From there the footpath took me alongside a fast-flowing dyke a little way before I took another fork left and made my way into Carlton. Two points - 1) as you begin the walk into Carlton, ignore the footbridge you come to, just continue on the path right, and 2) the road bridge in photo 14 doesn't have a path, but the road is quiet and a little care is all that's needed to walk under it...

We turn right along the far edge of the park - here the path goes into the park further right/west than the straight line on the GPX, but moves further east about two thirds of the way across where the path starts rising to cross the railway. Here we turn left - the actual well trodden footpath on the ground takes a straight line along the edge of the field and does not follow the right of way as marked on the OS map and the GPX file. Just before we reach the road in Stoke Bardolph the path goes right through trees to the road (not straight ahead as the GPX suggests). Where the lane ends we go straight on, then right along the next field boundary and left over Car Dyke to reach the Black Horse pub at Caythorpe. The GPX file and the OS map both show an impassable route beyond the road - we actually follow Thurgarton Lane right around the corner to an obvious path left, which is marked as a black dashed footpath on the OS 1:25000 map. At the next path junction the path goes half left before the hedge not after it (once again the OS map is wrong) and another track takes us straight on until we reach a farm road, which we follow until at a right turn we take the field path straight on into Gibsmere. When we reach the Bleasby-Fiskerton road at a crossroads, we turn left towards Bleasby - the pavement is initially on the right but crosses the road partway through the village. Our route goes left up Gorsy Lane over the railway until the lane ends at a field, where we follow the field edge round to the right and then left when we reach Halloughton Dumble, which we cross on a little wooden bridge. The right turn along another field edge is less obvious and could easily be missed, and the footpath around Weldon Farm stays in this field around another little wood, but the deviation from the right of way line beyond/north of the farm as shown on the GPX is correct (and since the path is enclosed through the edge of the farm this is impossible to miss). Where it emerges through a gap into an open field we follow the field boundary right and the obvious path down the hill past the school fence to the surfaced path parallel to Potwell Dyke....

Carlton and Radcliffe are not easy to connect, as there are no public bridges over the Trent between Lady Bay and Gunthorpe, so this route does quite an efficient job, though using the scenic path through Colwick Woods rules it out as a route for those with mobility issues. I walked it from Carlton to Radcliffe, and although almost all of the route was familiar territory, I quite enjoyed it, and this is the only Slow Ways route that uses the river path from Lady Bay to Holme Pierrepont (if only there was a right of way directly from the far end of Holme Pierrepont park to Radcliffe a much nicer route would be possible - there is a path round the far end of the rowing lake but you have to double back to Skylarks and use Holme Lane to get from there to Radcliffe, and this is too indirect to use here). The footpath over Lady Bay bridge is on the right (west) side of the bridge, and on the West Bridgford side the way down to the river path is beyond it, down a flight of steps to the right (west) of the road....
Hugh Hudson
No major issues, though the paths either side of Lambley Dumble have stiles and narrow plank bridges and are definitely not suitable for wheels of any kind. As noted by an earlier reviewer the new A6211 road has slightly diverted the path up from Gedling - there are no signposts yet but the new paths are surfaced and obvious. If you are unfamiliar with Gedling Country park and it is a clear day, the detour to the two viewpoints is worth doing....

The shortcut path up to the A46 bridge is narrow and a little overgrown, and involves going up a number of steps - it might be better to use the longer more easily graded surfaced path for accessibility reasons. The road this path emerges onto has no pavement, but is reasonably quiet. Another unsurfaced field path takes us to the A6097 - cross with care and patience as this road can be busy, then follow the lane a short distance and take the bridlepath left. Use the main gate into the churchyard, and follow the paths down to the bottom end of the graveyard, where a path takes you out to the field path alongside the road down Cuttle Hill. The shortcut path through the next field goes through an overgrown fallow field, so finding the right line requires a degree of confidence. Where the bridleway turns right, take the field path that follows the river bank across the meadow. Watch out for the right turn, which is a narrow overgrown path that is passable with care - this leads under a bridge and up a few steps and emerges onto a surfaced road. The surfaced road goes through another locked gate, but a little path continues down to the left, and soon splits....

This is quite an enjoyable walk, and for fitter walkers the route through Colwick Woods is by far the best way to do the middle part of it, but the path quality varies quite a lot - there are no serious obstacles or stiles but it does involve a number of ups and downs, and plenty of steps....
Hugh Hudson
One other minor concern is that it would be nice to improve the GPX file to clarify the route across the junction where Daleside Road meets Meadow Lane - there are plenty of pelican crossings but the straight line route is not possible....
Hugh Hudson
Having eventually reached the path in the Netherfield Lagoons nature reserve navigation becomes a lot easier. The path is up the side of the road on a wide verge before taking to the flood-bank. On the other side we take to a quiet road and after the cut-off across the fields parallel the road into East Bridgford on a well walked path. The busy A6097 road is crossed, and the path resumes on the other side....

Walk this routeFrom Carlton Station I walked along Midland Road (a quiet residential street) to reach the surfaced path through Whimsey Park woods. Eventually the path heads downhill to reach Colwick Road (Here I diverged from Notcar1). After a pedestrian crossing I walked downhill onto the pedestrianised Middle Pavement and shortly afterwards I used Bridlesmith Gate to reach the Council House and Old Market Square....

The Sneinton Greenway Section was pleasant, but the next bit alongside Daleside road was noisy with traffic, although there was a good pavement....

The route follows streets for a short time before heading up into woods and parkland (where most of the walk remains). Another short street walk and you will be walking along the train line before finding yourself in Carlton. There are steps and cycle barriers which makes it a problem for wheeled users but an unexpected pleasure of a route....

Although the first part of the route is on a smooth path beside the railway and the route at the Nottingham end is all paved, the section through Colwick Woods includes several sets of steps and rough paths so the route would not be suitable for wheelchairs or even bikes....

Comes out in another housing estate which then leads to a busy main road which you are on for about a mile. It may be possible to cross over and walk through the housing estate and country park on the opposite of the main road but I didn't check it out as showers were imminent....

This route takes you through some nice country footpaths with good views as you approach the top of Lambley before dropping down to Gedling. There is a problem with the route at about 3 miles as the route goes along a private drive with signs up saying 'no public right of way'. It is preferable to turn right at the stile at 2.7 miles and walk up to Gedling Country Park....
