Connect Caerwys with Slow Ways
We’re creating a network of walking routes that connect all of Britain’s towns, cities and national parks
more walks and reviews are needed to fully connect Caerwys to the verified network. Can you give a hike and help?

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Caerwys’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates
The route joins up to Offa’s dyke path and feels suddenly remote, the path then leads down to Tremeirchion. A good route which is easy to follow, has nice views and is not too strenuous....

As we move across the fields, you'll soon see that the route ahead differs somewhat from that on the OS map, as the footpath has been moved slightly: a small gate on the left leads us into a series of fields climbing uphill, a farm ruin to the right, so follow the route map closely here. At the end of one, a track leads downhill to a small bridge, where we leave and join a footpath heading uphill through fields. Around the corner, a footpath and a track take us away from the unpaved narrow roads, and then more field walks towards Penuchaf: the route map, and OS, suggests we go to the left of the buildings, but in reality we pass them on the right, through as little gate onto the drive. Follow it past the depot, and, as it turns as curves as we head uphill, there are some steps down into the woods on the right. (At time of survey, there was a gate to the left at this point. A footpath works through woods, until it becomes a green track around the lake by the lodges. Unsure of right of way here, but it does lead to the next part of the route). At the end, onto an unpaved road, but then a footpath and track uphill and through woods until we get to Caerwys....

Mostly a good route, but the section around Coed Cochion has changed so much, and some footpaths don't seem to exist at all. The new and improved version StaCae Two is much better and shows how it is on the ground, so go with that one instead....

From the centre of Caerwys, we head down the paved road until we join an unpaved track leading down to a sewage works and an old farm. Once over the common (and passing and info board), we cross the road by a former pub, and follow an unpaved lane until the end, and then, once through a gate, we follow the ramp up and over the footbridge over the busy A55; it's stepped on the other side. We continue downhill on a mostly unpaved road (care is required), then follow the main road into Holywell, then along another mostly unpaved road behind the petrol station....

Mostly a sound route, but, as previous reviewer had noted, the marked crossing of the busy A55, despite still marked on OS maps, does not exist on the ground (although there is a finger post on the road from Pentre Halkyn)....

This route didn't work due to a short section that didn't exist on the ground, but we walked Stacae two which was the same except for that bit, and a nice four-star route....

This beautiful walk over upland pasture gives panoramic views of rolling farmland. In the village of Caerwys you can pick up a coffee and a bap. The path takes you through interesting and varied countryside to the welcoming village of Tremeirchion, and on to the historic cathedral city of St Asaph....

New metal stiles and kissing gates on the Pilgrims' Way section, and a really lovely feel around Tremeirchion where it's obvious that it's a community that cares about making the land available to access and enjoy. But on the ground it's a very short section, wide and well used, which just extends the path that has bridleway access so we felt fine about using it....

1) Holywell bus station to Crooked horn (1.5 miles on road). Residential area out of town and over the A55 on a footbridge. No views until on the bridge. Only a few steps to access the bridge.. A paved bridleway for approx 1 mile (look out for the lime kiln to the left at the start of the bridleway) followed by another mile of road walking. The Black lion inn in Babell has been closed for several years and is currently being converted to other use. Leaving Babell enjoy views towards the Clwyds.. A short paved start leads to an unpaved bridleway part way along - joins a circular route between Caerwys-Babell-Ysceifiog which is route 1 in “Rural Walks in Flintshire”. At the road a footpath continues across fields to Coed Trefaith. This was a pleasant section.. It is a steep start but you are afforded views over Holywell the estuary and beyond...

Impossible to cross A55 (dual carriageway) at point shown...

Also line of track out of Flint shown wrongly - use track via April Rise farm....
