Help connect Buxton
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Buxton’s Slow Ways.

It is definitely a walk I’d do again as it’s got multiple steep climbs, lots of wall stiles and plenty of beautiful scenery you can enjoy in solitude for most of the time....

I have used the Staden Low/Deep Dale path a couple of times before but on both occasions used London Road at the Buxton end. As long as you pay attention to the signs the route is fairly easy to follow, though the path east from Cowdale starts with a stone stile that could be missed. The path over to Sough Top is less popular and has a series of stone stiles. At the pub we turn right up the hill on a path that is a little overgrown higher up, as is the path we follow down to the left at the top. A good path, with a few stray bramble shoots, takes us up the hill, where we briefly join the road before heading left on an old lane with good views. We reach another road then turn right down past a farm, then cross a sheep pasture to find the indistinct path down to the second (rather gentler) Deep Dale. The start of the path towards Bakewell could easily be missed, but the path is easy to follow....

Exploring the stunning views along Black Edge Access Land. The access land has good access i.e. I walked from Chapel and was soon passing through a pleasant park before another area of housing then the climb to the inconveniently location station which claims to serve the town. Crossing the minor road we enter Access Land and the climb gets steeper. A wall also keeps company with the path and this marks the access land boundary....

It continued on to provide wide vistas, a fantastic working quarry bird's-eye view, a slight detour to view the blue waters of Waterswallows quarry lake, farm land traverses, some quiet road and lane walking....

There is a short rough section, some steps and a short section on a busy road with only a narrow verge. I walked from Whaley Bridge and wonder why the route climbs then falls along the old road when the old tramway path might offer a level and step free exit. The name of the new road says it all because the slog up hill continues for three and a half miles ascending a thousand feet from Whaley Bridge....

I walked this route in two parts - in April 2023, between Flash and Leek (15 km of the total 24 km) and the rest in August, between Buxton and Flash. However, it is difficult in places: there are steep steps from a road below Flash, areas of stony scramble and the section between Flash and Ramshaw Rocks is generally very boggy....

There are no stiles, but there is a flight of steps (after crossing Chapel Road in Whaley Bridge) and a lot of the rocky tracks are unsuitable for wheels....

The climb back to the road makes this off road excursion a physical challenge as well. The route to Booth Farm is along a wide level but climbing track which has signs of being a well used important route in days past. I missed the path at Booth Farm passing to the south of the buildings heading for a track up the hillside before spotting my error. A left right at the road then it enters the Health and Safety site with lots of signs warning how dangerous it is to stray from the path. Again it wasn't clear where the path was so I moved left onto the tarmac track to meet the main road walk into Buxton....

Coming in you may prefer to follow the road for early refreshment at Wetherspoons but the climb out along the busy road can be avoided in Buxtid-2. Once onto Waterswallows Road it's plain sailing along the same route as Buxtid-2. The sign directing traffic to Hargate Hall is perhaps intended to avoid the rough section of road passing the farm and our route might do better, taking this to avoid a path that was another challenge to locate....

Good paths but some may be a bit of a challenge to follow so the plotted route needs constant attention. Once onto Waterswallows Road it's plain sailing along the same route as Buxtid-1. The sign directing traffic to Hargate Hall is perhaps intended to avoid the rough section of road passing the farm and our route might do better, taking this to avoid a path that was another challenge to locate....

This is a great White Peak walk, it's hard work and there are cattle, steep climbs and narrow rocky paths. It's are easy to follow but I am suggesting a few minor tweaks so recommend Buxbak-2. From here it's an immediate climb to the market place and what the map marks as the bus station. That had all been fairly easy walking but get ready for Deep Dale. Another track and a climb passing the village spring. If you don't require Taddington services stay on the top road to avoid a climb. After more track walking, Deep Dale (two) well it's a different parish so it's their deep dale. It's not as deep as the first but still a climb....

This route is an significant improvement over the MacBux1 route, cutting out the unnecessary climb to Tegg's Nose and avoided walking along busier roads. It is a scenic route but remains a challenging walk, with over 700m (2300ft) of ascent, which is unavoidable given the nature of the terrain between these two towns. The stated 12 miles is accurate between the two rail stations....
MacHiker
Choose this route for the straightest route between the two towns, but there is a nice more rural option using a section of the Midshires Way along the Goyt valley (waymarked and on OS maps)....

Walked out from Buxton; the streets are quite attractive but on the outskirts of the town safety on the road side may be a little questionable. Fortunately, that ends at the fast bend and the reminder has some rewarding views over verdant countryside....

I'd suggest walking to Long Lane, along Long Lane until Bank Hall drive, up the drive until you reach the cinder path (runs along by the railway), which will take you directly to Combs and has the benefit of stunning views across the valley and Combs reservoir...

A very short section is on a grass verge of a road but looks like it is maintained well....
