Help connect Brixton

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Brixton’s Slow Ways.

The route does keep you away from the main road for the most part and does nicely to take you through a green space, but navigation isn't straightforward, and you'll likely have to look at your map constantly to follow this route. It's functional, but it might be more trouble to follow this correctly than just taking the quick way - along the main road!...

Ingrina

Walk this route

I like the choice to take the green space path near Brixton, which is far enough away from the main roads to offer some quiet away from motor noises....

Ingrina

Walk this route

This route is absolutely fine and is good at taking quieter streets away from the main roads, it does the trick of connecting the two places in a safe way. Would not necessarily do it for fun as I would prefer to find more green space but it does pass through one park and would happily walk this again if I needed to get from one to the other....

From Dulwich Village, we walk west along Turney Road, then right onto Burbage Road and left at Half Moon Lane to reach the junction outside Herne Hill station, We cross under the railway and use the crossing over Norwood Road to enter Brockley Park, where we take the right hand path past the lido....

The route successfully avoided the main road by using lots of quiet side streets, but this meant more time spent on navigating....

Soon we were at the section that differs from BriDul1, by following a quieter road then branching off through a strip of parkland, which, although narrow, makes you forget the nearby road and traffic....

A nice and short walk connecting Dulwich Village and Brixton - unfortunately a lot is on pavements which is somewhat unavoidable. Nonetheless, a practical route that offers plenty of opportunities for further exploration both in Brockwell Park and Brixton itself....

Walk this route

It's a perfectly good route - takes in some greenery where possible, and otherwise follows perfectly safe and pleasant residential streets along the way. You won't catch me raving about it, but it's a perfectly acceptable Slow Ways route!...

I would suggest choosing one of the paths that goes towards the middle of the park and then runs diagonally back to the Clapham Junction corner. If you do follow the road, there is a dirt path just inside the park which is nicer than the pavement, although less accessible....

I started on this route down to Wandsworth Road rail station and then there was a gentle climb and then along urban streets to Clapham Station. Walk this route

It is mostly residential and has fairly wide pavements, but there are a few twists and turns, which means you need to keep an eye on the map. That said, you do tend to only make turns when you come to the end of a street/road, so that makes it much easier to navigate than other options winding through the streets. Feels fairly calm and safe, as it goes through a lot of homes and then ends at a high street right by the station....

Ingrina

Walk this route

It might feel less safe when it's dark, however, so if you're uncomfortable, you can use Herne Hill Road instead of Poplar Walk Passage, and then Coldharbour Lane instead of Brixton Station Road....

Ingrina

Walk this route

It does a great job park-hopping while staying fairly direct. I loved especially the stretch through Ruskin Park, with great views of London. The route just kept on giving, and it was quite fun to walk....

mtormey

Walk this route

An interest in architecture might make this route a bit more attractive but even in quiet streets, parked cars accompany you as you pound the pavements. Apart from a small green space, Heathbrook Park, you are walking along the pavements of very busy roads. On a positive note, there is no shortage of coffee shops along the way....

John Pestle

Walk this route

I liked this route for a lot of reasons: I thought the stretch around Brixton was quite interesting, the residential streets were quieter than the main road (though in places very quiet, which some might find uncomfortable), and there’s even a little park to walk through. Both routes are fine, but I might prefer this to the more direct version if I had a little extra time!...

mtormey

Some places to eat and drink around Loughborough Junction, and you pass two train stations if walking turns out not to be an option anymore....

LucyC

Walk this route

This is a more pleasant walk between the end points than Briken 2, although it is somewhat longer., It passes mainly along quiet residential streets including modern developments and social housing estates. There is a convenient pedestrian crossing close to the point at which you have to cross the busy Brixton Road. It would no doubt be possible to find other similar 'back street' routes which might be more pleasant, but it is probably not worth the effort....

David Livesley

Walk this route

This route follows the obvious and direct route between Brixton and Oval stations, but that comes at the cost of following the busy main road. There are definitely worse main roads to walk along - you pass a number of areas of grass and trees just off the road - but it is always busy during the day. Choose this option if you are in a hurry; if not, choose Briken 1 instead....

David Livesley

This walk takes a direct and pleasant route between West Dulwich and Brixton....

AndrewRees

Walk this route

This route starts along a main road, and apart from a short stretch across a small park the first third passes through mixed residential/ industrial areas which are not very attractive. After crossing the railway bridge, it becomes more pleasant, past large 3-4 storey Victorian terraced houses (stay on the residential road rather than taking the one closer to the railway line, which runs parallel). Towards Brixton the houses along the residential streets become plainer, but it remains easy walking on pavements all the way....

David Livesley

Walk this route

However, rather than walking along the busy road at the side of Clapham Common, a more pleasant and only marginally longer route is to follow the path to the bandstand in the centre of the common (tarmac, so still a hard smooth surface), and from there the similar path to the far corner of the common. The route as specified is entirely on pavements, and the only obstacles would be the curbs at road crossings....

Route follows busy main road with one green space. Lots of shops, cafes along the route. Air pollution high enroute in Streatham....

Lizbiz70

Walk this route

This is an urban walk on pavements throughout, and given that context, it is as pleasant as can reasonably be expected. It largely follows quieter back streets apart from at the two ends. The only slightly awkward bit is across the Balham Sainsbury's car park - watch out for cars not paying attention to pedestrians....

Walk this route

Apart from the section through Brockwell Park it is on roadside pavements, but there are no practical alternatives which avoid roads. It is largely flat and the route is paved the whole way, with the only obstacles being curbs at road crossings. It only gets 3 stars from me because it is not very interesting or scenic, but no alternatives would be any different....

Walk this route

Rather than sticking to a traffic-laden main road this route takes you through the backstreets and byways of this little stretch of Lambeth, complete with a nice green space with a small hill. This walk takes you through several housing estates - some old and some new - and on the way there are a number of shops and offices reflecting the multi-cultural population. This is a better option than Briken two...

This is a perfectly satisfactory route between Brixton and West Dulwich stations. David Livesley

Walk this route

Like many of the urban routes this one does not conform to the methodology used for mapping when it comes to being off-road and enjoyable and beautiful. However there are some ameliorating aspects on this route, primarily more green spaces and less traffic although overall this was another pavement pounding exploration....
