Help connect Brinklow

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Brinklow’s Slow Ways.

Pleased to find a trig point just out of town and fields were a little waterlogged, but passable (we have had a lot of rain recently)....

This route takes you out of Coventry city centre through Hillfields and along the Coventry canal, through woodlands and crossing over some of the major A roads in Coventry before walking through fields and farms at the back of Coombe Abbey and into Brinklow. There were two short sections on quite busy roads which do require some care. Refreshments available from shops and pubs on the way out of Coventry and pubs, a cafe and the village store in Brinklow....

From Peter Hall it's a bit of walking on the road before you get to the track to Hillfields & Walsgrave Farms. Eventually the route reaches the Sowe Valley & Stoke Floods Green which is a welcome break from the road walking, but it's not long before you're back next to the traffic for the remainder of the journey into the City....

Like a previous review, I wondered why the route diverted away from the canal for a short section, but I agree it does add a little more variety....

Good route following the Coventry Way for the whole journey so well sign posted. Have walked a number of times. A few changes coming out of Ryton due to new warehouses but signposted....

There are places to stop for food/drink along the route - Brinklow has pubs and shops (and a nice chippy), Wolston, Ryton, Bubbenhall have pubs and/or shops and there is a lavender farm just outside Bubbenhall that has a cafe which appears to be open Friday/Saturday (at time of writing)...

There is only a short section on a road without a pavement in Brinklow which you need to take care on, but the rest of the route is away from roads or through a residential area (on the outskirts of Rugby)....

The canal tow path is narrow, so not great if you like to walk next to your walking buddy, but otherwise is passable....

Walk this route

A few trips away from the busy city as you get to follow both the canal and the River Sowe for a short while, before heading through Coombe Abbey Park and onto Brinklow. Ice cream, cafe and toilets available in Coventry and at Coombe Abbey (a short detour off of the route)...

A pleasant walk out of Coventry, with a detour to follow the River Sowe for a while, before moving through Coombe Abbey Park and picking up the Coventry Way to Binklow....

Walk this route

The route leaves the village and passes through grassy fields. The route leaves the canal to pass through village of Ansty, where there is an "Eatery". The section by Park Farm was a little confusing, but only because the route is marked differently on the map to how it is on the trail....

3 Following the route from Rugby, as I did, at SP 4984 7701 the route quite specifically tells you to turn right and follow a path to a bridge where you can supposedly join the Oxford Canal. Had the route not directed me right I would have found a set of steps to the canal further ahead...

Walk this route

Joining up with a cycle route, over the current railway and then along an old railway you soon find yourself on the Oxford Canal. The path leaves the canal for a section, which I questioned at the time, but it helps to add some variety to the walk, as you follow a track through woods, then have a very short section of lane before rejoining the canal....

Follows named paths but some junctions lacked signage so detailed route was required. Varied across fields, canal tow path very little on road. I would walk it again...

Walk this route

A few points of note: when leaving Brinklow near the start you walk along a stream - make sure you are on the right hand side of the fence otherwise you will not get through. Approaching the M6 crossing there are very few markers and the overgrown or planted fields give no clear route through....

Only possible issue to be aware of would be the section after passing under A46 (west to east) before entering Coombe Abbey grounds, hedge possibly impinging onto the footpath could narrow the path and there is quite fast traffic (we walked in spring)....

It makes good use of old railway to exit Rugby, but long sections of Oxford canal path are in very poor condition....

Walk this route

Easy to follow with no serious obstacles - 1 high stile in early part. Provides a mix of field paths and urban parks. Last 2 miles into Coventry is rather dull with streets full of waste bins....
