Help connect Blyth
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Blyth’s Slow Ways.

I walked this route (from Blyth to Newbiggin) in two stages. I started a bit South of the starting point at Blyth South beach and stocked up at the Greggs there. Once out of Blyth the walk continues upstream up the river Blyth where lots of birds can be heard singing and swans were seen in the river. I crossed the river on the pedestrian path beside the (very busy) A 189....

The route leaves the promenade and follows the England Coast Path on grassy cliff top paths. The plotted line does not show the route to get onto the bridge over the river so follow NCN signs to Blyth via Cowpen to get onto the bridge, then go down the stairs on the other side of the bridge....

Initially this was an enjoyable walk along leafy paths and waggonways. The 3 star rating reflects the latter part where it was all pavement walking for 40 minutes. There was some interesting public art in the underpasses at the beginning of the walk....

Plessey waggon way was a nice area to walk Rather a lot of pavement walking by the road coming into Blyth....

You are walking beside the estuary of the River Blyth with views down to the port. When you get to the farm you walk past it using field boundaries, paths and in one section walking across cultivated fields. You come to the next river estuary, The Sleek Burn. A walk over the bridge and through the village leads to a section of road walking, (on pavement), past electricity infrastructure, a new factory building site and a failed car battery enterprise. You have the option of walking on the beach itself or following the path through the dunes and along the cliff top. The path then then heads past Charltons Bar and Restaurant along a good made up path to the estuary of the River Wansbeck....

On the approach to the bridge across the River Blyth you join the England Coast Path. from the bridge you are following the banks of the tidal River Blyth which is really nice....

You can make it slightly shorter by taking the more inland path round the nature reserve at St Mary's Island. Suitable for bikes too and there's the option of the Arriva 308 bus (Blyth - Newcastle via Whitley Bay) if you don't want to walk in both directions....

We extended it by going on to Tynemouth along the coastal road - lovely sea views and past the gem of a small harbour of Cullercoats, and the surfers on Tynemouth Long Sands....
