Help connect Bletchley

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Bletchley’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates

The rest of the walk along the Grand Union Canal was stunning with the amazing autumn colours (photo #3, #4, #5, #8), although a little monotonous. After the Wyvers Shipping Company the route leaves the canal to go along the river Ouzel (photo #10), where the path was in two small sections slightly flooded. To avoid it, you could go along the canal (photo #13) a bit further south to Leighton Road (photo #12)....

And then use that to cross under the H8 Standing Way to Kincardine Drive and then follow Angus Drive to pick up the route at Buckfast Park. Then the route skirts around the outside of Bletchley Park (photo #6) along its north side, before going a little along Sherwood Drive to finish at Bletchley Station....

I discovered it isn’t possible to do this: the museum can only be accessed through the main entrance to the Bletchley Park complex, along Jemima Way, which is further along the route, shortly before the meeting point at Bletchley station! Don’t pay for Bletchley Park entrance (unless you want to of course), the computer museum charges separately and it’s a lot lot cheaper....

The pavement is set back far from the road and a series of wide underpasses allow you to walk through without having to cross any other roads. There is a short cross country section involving 2 kissing gates and then a walk along the pavement of the busy road to Woburn Sands....

Plays to the strengths of the city and gets away from the traffic better than Milble 4, but does encounter a set of steps in Furzton Park which means it isn't completely accessible for all. A safe, direct, offroad and enjoyable walk. I did have problems downloading the gpx for this route but managed to plot it....

From the starting point in central Leighton Buzzard you soon find yourself offroad alongside the River Ouzel. There are links to public transport at either end although the Leighton Buzzard end is a 10min walk from the railway station....

It starts at the station and goes along a wide pavement before accessing the now residential area of Bletchley Park via Turing Way (you get a view of the entrance to the museum if you fancy the excursion). I started this route in Bletchley and the route starts really well. It's only because I was reviewing, that I discovered that the route across the industrial estate lead to a path which leads to an underpass under the A421. When I first volunteered for Slow Ways I was really envious of anyone who'd got to plot a Milton Keynes Slow Way....

The way to go via the Tear Drop lakes is to turn right as come out of Milton Keynes railway station and follow national cycle route 51 over Railway bridge then turn left to the Teardrop lakes, (would make route slightly shorter as well)....

The first problem is that west of Shipton the route relies on a footpath that doesn't exist. If you back track to Shipton and then follow the road round to Abovemead Farm and rejoin the route you find your self in some very wet/marshy land (this was after nearly two weeks without rain) which is only passable with difficulty. This is fairly easy for the western end, but because of the construction work on the Oxford Bletchley railway line, not so easy for the eastern end of the route at the moment....

One item to note - the route shown is blocked by a locked gate when heading from Milton Keynes to Bletchley, but easy to navigate round, just take the footpath left at Denbeigh Hall Industrial Estate and skirt round the edge, adds about one minute of walking....
