Walked as part of the National Parks Challenge 2026. A delightful route with some lovely views along the way. Signs of flooding so in the winter months it might be a challenge....

There is a great post office and shop in Corhampton - it’s currently the front runner for the best one in over 450 miles....

Much of the southern half follows the Monarch's Way, the northern half the Wayfarer's Walk; I agree that a detour following the long distance footpath via Hinton Ampner would probably be beneficial rather than the road in Cheriton. At the Bishop's Waltham end I could avoid much of the main road by following the High Street to St Peter's Church and then Free Street, which is a recommended diversion....

The ground was very wet and muddy for large portions of the route, so suitable footwear is a must if walking this after a rainy period....

Walk this route

The paths are very unclear and I just had to strike across the fields (or follow the edges) - fortunately the fields were empty of crops. There is a new housing development by Fir Tree Lane / Allington Lane with building works, so I could not follow the marked route exactly, but it was easy enough to rejoin afterwards....

I would give it five stars except in various places the route has not been drawn accurately enough: it shows straight lines where the real route is much more wiggly! Examples are the field just outside of Upham (west); coming into Owlesbury from the south (where you might be put off by "Private Keep Out" notices); the Pilgrims' Trail just north of Hazeley Road; and the river route coming into Winchester....

The route passes over the rolling hills of the South Downs and through some lovely rural villages, took me about 3 hours in all at a moderate pace. NOTE: This Route (BisCor2) is a revised version of one (BisCor1) that I originally walked - This is a safer route and slightly shorter...

I really enjoyed the part from Soberton to Horndean, but found the walk from Bishops Waltham to Swanmore incredibly dull. (although the same could be said about the other end walking though Horndean!) That said Bishops Waltham is a beautiful Historic Market Town and well worth the visit....

You then walk down to the River Meon at Droxford, again don't stress about finding the footpath up to the Village shop, just follow the main path past the mill onto Mill Lane (its much prettier and FAR safer than walking down the A32 - you can do this perfectly safely, there is pavement, there is just no need). As you enter the woods out the back of Dundridge the SlowWays path does a funny loop up to the road, but there is absolutely no need for this, just follow the sign-posted path down the hill to re-join the route!...

Walk this route

The route crosses a number of stiles, and parts of the route include uneven ground. When I walked this route at the end of August 2022, energy lines were being installed on part of the route between Bishop's Waltham and Upham, so I followed the roads to divert around it, then followed the trail back to the obstruction....

It was a very enjoyable route to walk, although it's pretty long....

The 'path' across the field is very boggy (even in summer) and I would suggest continuing east from West Horton Farm towards Lake Farm and then turning south to walk through the farm buildings....

It also crosses a grass airstrip at one point but again this is not busy and it's easy to see at hear whether it's in use at the particular moment....
