Help connect Bethesda

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Bethesda’s Slow Ways.

Pleasant walk mostly on the old railway line from Bethesda to Bangor (could easily follow this the whole way to avoid Bangor Mountain). Views somewhat lacking on this section compared to the nearby mountains!...

I like this route, it does have some beautiful views, especially between Rhiwlas and Beran Garage, Beran Garage has a well stock Co Op on site, and Brynrefail does indeed have a very good cafe on the site of the old high school called the Caffi Caban. The bicycle path along side Padarn is a lovely and easy path to finish this walk. There are lots of places to eat and drink at both Bethesda and Llanberis...

The only issue i have with this route(and the Snowdonia Slate Trail), is crossing the moor from Mynydd Llandegai to above Deiniolen, specifically the path between Afon Marchlyn-Mawr and Afon Marchlyn-Bach. I have yet to find a route between these 2 streams that does not end up with your feet wet, the waymarked route definitely leads to wet socks. If you are looking for a path between Bethesda and Llanberis, i would recommend the Llabet 3 path, that path has good views across Anglesey, and avoids the problems at Mynydd Llandegai...

It then follows Afon Ogwen stream and crosses it via bridge shown on the third photo. The next section goes along the main A5 road out of Bethesda and you need to watch out for an exit towards the stream as shown on the fourth photo. When it reaches Dorothy Stringer Outdoor Pursuit Trust farm there are wooden steps over a stonewall to cross on the right. The fifth photo shows the most dangerous rocky hole that walkers need to cross. The route continues by Gwern Gof Isaf Campside with a couple of wooden tables by the side. The GPS signal between 9th and 8th km before Betws-y-Coed was erratic - sometimes showing my location too far to the right of the route and a couple of steps away showing my location too far to the left. Somewhere between 4th and 3rd km before Betws-y-coed, the route crosses a tributary of Afon Llugwy stream via a wooden bridge....
