Help connect Berkhamsted

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Berkhamsted’s Slow Ways.

But the route draws straight lines where turns and meanders should exist and is therefore longer than the stated 14km. This caused me to miss a train and walk in fading light as it took longer than I calculated....

The walk takes you down marked footpaths but we did need to use the OS map to find our way....

Walk this route

Turned out to be a lot more scenic than I expected (it helped that it was a sunny day!) and we managed to follow the route without too much issue....

although it was lovely to walk along the canal again, it was fairly monotonous...

The descent through the woods in Tring Park was also quite steep (as mentioned by another reviewer) - I managed to get down without too much difficulty but there are a couple of other footpaths that look slightly less steep to the north of the route....

Almost immediately out of Markyate you're in beautiful Hertfordshire countryside, going through and around arable fields, pasture, meadow, besides woods, through villages with scenic churches... It's mostly off-road, can be muddy in places but overall I really enjoyed this walk!...

I walked this from Berkhamstead to Amersham on a mostly overcast Saturday afternoon, with little recent rain. You then pass a lovely cemetery and go through some more woods to end up with a little road walking in Amersham....

Out of Tring the walk isn't very interesting, until you cross the A41 into Tring Park, which was lovely and there were some cows in the field....

Starting from Berkhamsted, I had no idea quite what a varied walk this would be. The edge of the village is where Tring Park begins. This walk is direct, safe, and really nice to walk....

I walked this route from Tring to Berkhamsted and while I really enjoyed it overall, there was a notable point of discontinuity. I’ll upload a Triber two that’s nearly identical but fixes the navigation challenge of this route....

Very straightforward and pleasant route along the Grand Union canal, linking Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted railway stations. Plenty of refreshment stops at either end - particularly in Berkhamsted, where the walk runs through the middle of the town....

Some rather quaint houses and bridges along the way, and we were able to have our picnic in Berkhamsted Castle right by the railway station at the end of the route. A lovely morning's walk!...

There are steps to get under a bridge in Berkhamsted, steps to get over a bridge just outside Brkhamstead and steps or stepping stones to access the tow path at Hemel Hempstead but other than that it's pretty level - with the usual sloped paths around the lock gates. A pleasant walk....
