A beautiful walk, open fields, golf courses, woodland, and quaint villages with interesting architecture....

But, this is a beautiful walk well worth the effort, and in the autumn sunshine really quite stunning....

Strider added Ameber two, a new walk from Amersham to Berkhamsted
Walk this routeBut the route draws straight lines where turns and meanders should exist and is therefore longer than the stated 14km. This caused me to miss a train and walk in fading light as it took longer than I calculated....
Strider
The walk takes you down marked footpaths but we did need to use the OS map to find our way....
Kate Wells
Turned out to be a lot more scenic than I expected (it helped that it was a sunny day!) and we managed to follow the route without too much issue....
Simon
although it was lovely to walk along the canal again, it was fairly monotonous...
Derick Rethans
The descent through the woods in Tring Park was also quite steep (as mentioned by another reviewer) - I managed to get down without too much difficulty but there are a couple of other footpaths that look slightly less steep to the north of the route....

Almost immediately out of Markyate you're in beautiful Hertfordshire countryside, going through and around arable fields, pasture, meadow, besides woods, through villages with scenic churches... It's mostly off-road, can be muddy in places but overall I really enjoyed this walk!...

As usual a few places where you need to ensure you are on the right path because of the large number of tracks and paths ion the area....
Richard and Carole
Therefore, really important to follow the route carefully, preferably using a GPS....

I walked this from Berkhamstead to Amersham on a mostly overcast Saturday afternoon, with little recent rain. You then pass a lovely cemetery and go through some more woods to end up with a little road walking in Amersham....
Derick Rethans
Out of Tring the walk isn't very interesting, until you cross the A41 into Tring Park, which was lovely and there were some cows in the field....
Derick Rethans
Starting from Berkhamsted, I had no idea quite what a varied walk this would be. The edge of the village is where Tring Park begins. This walk is direct, safe, and really nice to walk....
David Sanderson
The first section of canal beyond Hemel has countryside surroundings. As you near the meeting point at Berkhamsted Station, the last section of towpath offers a number of welcoming pubs....
David Sanderson
Navigation is easy but, at the Hemel end the route shows accessing the canal on the East of the bridge which involves a narrow kissing gate and a shallow wade across a weir....
Strider
I walked this route from Tring to Berkhamsted and while I really enjoyed it overall, there was a notable point of discontinuity. I’ll upload a Triber two that’s nearly identical but fixes the navigation challenge of this route....

Finally, there’s great forest (complete with an obelisk in the woods?) and grassy park walking on final approach into the lovely town of Tring....

I walked this route from Hemel Hempstead to Berkhamsted....

Very straightforward and pleasant route along the Grand Union canal, linking Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted railway stations. Plenty of refreshment stops at either end - particularly in Berkhamsted, where the walk runs through the middle of the town....
Hock55
Some rather quaint houses and bridges along the way, and we were able to have our picnic in Berkhamsted Castle right by the railway station at the end of the route. A lovely morning's walk!...
lwatson
Route poorly plotted south of Berkhamsted as it crosses A41. The straight line shown deviates significantly from the actual road....
Slow Ways Darren
Overall, however, it was a lovely varied walk through fields, lanes and bluebell woods and generally easy to follow and walk....
lwatson
There are steps to get under a bridge in Berkhamsted, steps to get over a bridge just outside Brkhamstead and steps or stepping stones to access the tow path at Hemel Hempstead but other than that it's pretty level - with the usual sloped paths around the lock gates. A pleasant walk....
