Help connect Aylsham
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Aylsham’s Slow Ways.

A lot of this walk was really nice, but our group of six faced issues with overgrown footpaths, deep mud, poor signposting and some of the mapped out route didn't make sense. This has been detailed in the image attached....

Only parts of the path are paved, with most of the path going along uneven and potentially muddy ground, so it's suitable for walking but would be difficult to wheel this route. The route extends beyond the Weavers' Way car park once you get into North Walsham, and this section of the route is paved and easy to access....

During the walk we saw a single cyclist and a few dog walkers, although as you're able to join the route at various stages, I suspect they didn't cycle / walk the full 9 miles (18 if returning!) - unfortunately the train wasn't running on the day we walked and so we had to plan who drove to Wroxham / Alysham and who would drive each other back - none of us fancied the return 9 miles....

I walked this route in September 2023, from Horsham St Faith towards Aylsham. The walk through Horsham St Faith was quiet, and not much traffic at all, before going down a quiet road and joining a footpath, this was a bit overgrown but still able to walk through fine. You then arrive in Newton St Faith, and from here there is a long stretch of walking along a road, which was not busy, however the first part when leaving Newton St. All in all, a pleasant route to walk, although the long stretch of road between Newton St Faith and Hainford (particularly the couple of corners) would be something that would need to take care with (and the reason for 4* instead of 5)....

Both me and a work colleague walked this route in August 2023. Dry underfoot through whole route - even though overnight rain. Overgrown in 2 small parts of the route. Very small section of route on a road which had very tight bends (on-coming car danger)....

There were some parts where you had to walk on the road which wasn't ideal....

The start in Reepham is country roads with little path ways or walking on Road, until you hit Marriott's way which is then a nice old railway way turned into a cycle way / walking path with mile markers....
Tom B
The route includes a mixture of public footpaths, restricted byways, bridleways, fields, through national trust parks and walking along the road (both quiet country roads and slightly busier main roads). There were several kissing gates and stiles on the route and one small steep set of stairs needed to access the public footpath/field near Marlpit Road....

This walk has such a great mix of places to walk - fields, country roads, National Parks, woods etc....

We walked this route in the opposite direction, so walking from Alysham to Holt....

This is variously surfaced, with a nice surface at the Aylsham end, moving to a more muddy path as you get away from the town....

This section is the Bure Valley Walk between Hoveton and Aylsham is consisting of a footpath/Cyclepath alongside the Bure Valley Railway. Therefor it is flat and takes advantage of the embankments and cuttings that facilitate the railway. It is well maintained and sections of it are being resurfaced this year...

I can’t say I’d recommend this walk for push chairs or wheel chairs as whilst some parts had good wheel chair access (such as the Coltishall access stop), there were some potentially awkward obstacles to overcome (pictured)....
Tom
Great walking route but it would be tough for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Uneven, gravel walkaways would make wheeling hard work. Pathways are narrow in places and some exits off the route are steps only....
Helen Watson
Dedicated walking and cycling route that runs adjacent to Bure Valley light railway....

This route mostly traces the Aylsham-Cromer section of the Weavers' Way long-distance path, and so it is a reliable path....
