Help connect Axminster
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Axminster’s Slow Ways.

Great connection between Axminster and Lyme for those that want to walk one way....

Most of the route was clear and pleasant, especially just outside Axminster along the river....

I've no doubt that in the summer months its a glorious route!...

We walked from Crewkerne to Axminster, and this route worked perfectly. I'd certainly recommended it!...

other than the advice to take a stick or some secateurs to cut back the nettles that a blocking the path in a few pinch points....

There is a little bit of lane walking, but the route mostly follows public footpaths through fields. The route starts out from Axminster on pavement beside the B3261, but then crosses over to pick up part of the NCN2 cycle route - a good traffic-free section of path which passes under the A35 (note that very tall people may need to duck slightly!), through fields then along a public byway into Kilmington....

Walk this routeThe rest of the route is on good footpaths, some field crossings and quiet country lanes....

Looking forward to doing it again in the summer and stopping off for a vegan roast (one of two options!) at the Tucker Arms in Dalwood....

Thoroughly enjoyed walking it and will stop in at the Tucker Arms (in Dalwood) for the vegan roast next time. Nothing to add on Helen's review....

I walked this route on a very wet winters day, but it was a great walk despite the conditions. In Lyme the route uses the River Lim path all the way to the sea, which is mostly traffic free, and is in my view the nicest walk through Lyme....
Helen Gough
Leaving Axminster train station the walk was spoilt by traffic until we turned onto the footpath by the fire station, from then on it was a very pleasant walk....

In fact the whole walk was quiet, very little traffic or people noise once outside the towns of Chard and Axminster. There was one field where that wasn't possible, and I walked round the edge which was a bit overgrown....
Helen Gough
I walked from Axminster and it starts with a section walking along a quiet lane, before walking through meadows alongside the River Yarty. There is a lot of lane walking, but all the lanes are quiet, and for winter walks, lanes can be a relief from the mud....

Walk this routeThe Axminster half of the route is all on lanes, or alongside roads....

Walk this routeOnce you've left Axminster and cross the A35, you're on small country lanes....

Out of beaminster up onto Common Water lane can be very muddy with the path non-existent....
Maurice Atkinson
I walked this route from Axminster on a beautifully clear day; it has some excellent views along the way and was easy to follow....
Stephen Gee
At the end we did not join Coombe Street as the route shows, but walked on along the river side and went through the delightful Town Mill area with its artisan shops and eating places before rejoining Coombe Street....

Walked slowly up the hills, as carrying a big pack, took a couple of wrong turnings and had to find my way back - easy with the OS map to guide me and so took a third more time than recommended even with the shortcut through Axminster....
Louise070
If you prefer not to walk along the roadway, you have a good map and the weather is good, then the route continuing straight on from Chardstock Church via Burridge common into Chard is a nice walk. You can rejoin the Slow Ways route at Bounds lane and enjoy the fantastic views over Chard....
Hilary Willoughby
Very nice walk, fairly direct and well maintained route (only a couple of non-obvious boundary crossings, at least going in the Bridport to Axminster direction)...
