Help connect Ampthill

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Ampthill’s Slow Ways.

From Millbrook station the route is along the road, with no path, and only a rough verge alongside blind corners. The other part that lets the route down is from the bottom of Marston Thrift, and across the busy A421 via a bridge. There's a pub, The Bell, just a few metres from where the route leaves the roadside and leads down to Marston Church, and on across fields to Millbrook Station. The route from the church gives options to take in the lovely Marston Vale Forest adjacent to Stewartby Lake, and the associated Forest Centre....

There is also one busy roundabout which has a steep footbridge over it but there is an alternative way across on the other side of the road but this might be tricky at busy times as there are no pedestrian crossing lights. This is as you come up from the aforementioned roundabout and need to take a left turn off the main road....

Lovely start to the walk through Ampthills green spaces, followed by a lot of walking on pavement alongside the main road. Enjoyed scenery and woodlands of the first half greatly. Second half was why I didn't score it higher....

A lovely walk, leading across the fields near Flitwick, after which there is a road crossing which could be tricky in high traffic. Walk continues across fields and residential parts of Ampthill....

On leaving Ampthill's residential area ,there is a road bridge (photo 6) over the A507 which would present an issue for wheels, but you can just cross via the junction by the fuel garage (photo 7) After this point there is a further 2km of pavement walking alongside the busy Flitwick Road, which is tolerable but not overly pleasant....

On approach to Maulden Road, things get a little less clear, as the trail isn't marked on the ground and the map says it follows the road north....

This is a straightforward and pleasant route that takes you from Flitwick to Ampthill ion Bedfordshire....

The only point to note here is when you get to the end of this section where the route takes you out onto the Woburn Road, the route as plotted suggests you need to go through a locked gate when in fact you should follow the path round to the right a little way, which takes you to a pelican crossing allowing you to cross the road safely. There are a few kissing gates in the first section from Woburn Sands to Ridgmont and then a couple more when the route passes into Ampthill Park, but no stiles and apart from a few steep but short climbs nothing too taxing....
