Help connect Alexandria

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Alexandria’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates

This was a fine route until the storms earlier this year; it is now substantially blocked by fallen trees. There is a rough walkaround (in blue on picture - no path, steep) via the Killoeter ridge or an alternate on tracks to Cardross (see the Three Lochs Way website)....

Sign-posting is available for the only part of the journey that you can potentially get lost (between Dumbarton Central and the bridge crossing the River Leven) and once you reach the cycle path, you simply follow this all the way to Alexandria. The route starts and ends at train stations with frequent services and you will easily be able to hop on a train at the end of your journey should you need it, although the walk back coming off the cycle path and going through the towns provides a nice alternative return option....

The path was clear to follow, and after a climbing zigzag, it entered the forest. The route through here was a little less clear and it was a bit of a climb, with a few steps. There is a welcome cinder path over the bog across this highest section and I had cracking views of the other side now, looking towards the Firth of Clyde, Greenock, and Helensburgh. All these paths make it an easy route to follow; it would have been horrible going over the bog before this gravel path was made. The wooded path down Red Glen was fairly steep and the gravel was occasionally slightly skiddy where it was steep....

There's a section of this route, near Gouk Hill, which looks challenging, if not impossible, to walk. Instead I continued to follow the Three Lochs Way at this point, as also suggested by the Walk Highlands website. The pictures show the problem area....

There was a great view of Dumbarton Castle from the Bridge Street bridge, and a wide cycle barrier onto the track alongside the River Leven. Crossing under the A82 was easy, and there was an easy gate and a bridge both offering at least 100cm width....
