Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Aldermaston Wharf’s Slow Ways.

It goes to show that it is easy to guess where the route will be heading next and it is easy to follow....

The route out of Tadley crosses Tadley Common (Photo 1). The Slow Way crosses the canal via a lifting bridge, and ends at Aldermaston Wharf train station....

This Slow Ways route connecting Tadley and Aldermaston Wharf is a safer alternative to Tadald One, avoiding dangerous walking on roads at Padworth Common. Unfortunately the bridge over the canal at Aldermaston Wharf was closed for repair so I had to divert on alternative rights of way to rejoin the route at Padworth Church, but the bridge will reopen in March 2024....

Berkshire Walker added Tadald two, a new walk from Tadley to Aldermaston Wharf
Walk this routeI agree with the previous reviewer that although this is mostly a pleasant route, the section of road walking on the fast and busy Reading Road is too dangerous for this to be an acceptable addition to the network. I will upload an alternative route using off road option and quiet lanes to by pass the dangerous road....
Berkshire Walker
You can stop at the Rowbarge at Midgham for food & drink, or at the Aldermaston Tea Rooms at Aldermaston Wharf. Both are right by the canal towpath....
steveculshaw
An enjoyable and mostly rural route through west Berkshire using quiet country lanes and footpaths, with lots of wildlife especially Bluebells in late April. Slightly too much walking on roads to justify a 5 star rating. Apart from the Red Lion pub at Upper Basildon no refreshment stops on route until Goring and Streatley....
Berkshire Walker
A short route in North Hampshire from Tadley to the Kennet & Avon canal at Aldermaston Wharf. Unfortunately, there is then a section of the Reading Road at the southern perimeter of the Aldermaston M.O.D. The route continues north along a quiet tarmacked lane (Photo 3). Finally, the route crosses the Kennet & Avon canal to end at Aldermaston Wharf station....

From that point, it crosses the level crossing (with the option to walk over the bridge if the gates are down) and then left along the canal path. The canal path is generally level except for inclines at a couple of bridge crossings....

From Reading station, the route goes through the town centre to join the towpath behind the Oracle shopping centre. The towpath then goes all the way to Aldermaston Wharf from where it is just a short roadside walk to Aldermaston station....

A handy footpath runs south parallel to the road. The Red Lion is on the junction where the route turns south (Photo 3). A footpath leads south (Photo 8) across fields and a copse, to the road into Beenham. There was some road walking through Beenham (Photo 9). I would give the walk from Goring to Upper Basildon 5 stars, and the route as a whole one less for the amount of road walking thereafter....

Leave the canal after Aldermaston Lock (Photo 2), crossing the Lift Bridge to reach Aldermaston Station....

Leave the canal at the Oracle shopping precinct (Photo 4) for a street walk to Reading Station....

A straightforward and pleasant route largely using the Kennet and Avon canal towpath. At Thatcham station the route leaves the towpath, crossing over the level crossing to follow alongside the road into the town centre - approx...

Beautiful walk along the Kennet and Avon canal all the way from Reading to Aldermaston, dovetailing with National Cycle Route 4 for most of the way - and plenty of wildlife to see as you go....
