Help connect Aberdeen
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Aberdeen’s Slow Ways.

Divert early down Waterloo Quay and onto York Street, this will take you into Footdee/fittie, very nice old fishing village. Short Review - Nice start along harbour, Footdee, esplanade, river don, we saw seals (thanks to a local) on the left side of don bridge on island. 2-3k Fitdee very nice old fishing village with small houses and tight streets. Saw seals from left hand side of bridge, local man was nice enough to point them out thankfully as I'm not always the most observant....

Short Review - First 5k uneventful road walking, however the last 10k+ really makes up for it. 1-5k Pretty uneventful road walking. 13-14k Walk along pavement, get to see Lighthouse and foghorn. Really enjoyed this walk, nature trail at Cove was nice, love clifftop trails, close to new harbour, then up and around by lighthouse which leads to good views of harbour proper...

I walked this route as part of a long distance walk starting from Aberdeen which ended up in Braemar (via Glen Esk and the Mounth). I didn't actually do the whole of this slow way on this date as I walked from where I lived in Aberdeen, joining the Deeside way at Cults....

At the Lerwick end, it passes through the ferry area to then follow pavements to Commercial Street, the main shopping street, which is pedestrianised....

The ferry does the hard work for most of the route and then there is a walk from the Lerwick Northlink Ferry terminal to the meeting point in town....

Walked this route from on probably the hottest day of the year so far, with the coastal breeze providing a lovely cooling effect. Direction walked: Aberdeen to Portlethen (North to South). After this, I turned onto the Aberdeen Coastal Path, which runs along the top of the cliffs and weaves its way in and out of deep inlets which in the past were used to store fishing boats. The coastal path goes as far as Cove Bay, where I passed the Cove Bay Hotel (public bar), crossed the railway bridge and soon entered the lovely Cove Community Woodland. I then took a long stretch of road walking to get to Portlethen though the roads are quiet, passing through farmland. - taking the cycle path alongside the railway instead of the coastal path between Greg Ness and North Altens would reduce the distance a bit - continuing South on the clifftop path to Cove Bay harbour (quite a scenic spot) and up the hill through the village to rejoin the route at the railway bridge I would give this route 4 stars, with the star taken off due to the industrial stretch on the way in/out of Aberdeen and the long (but quiet) road walk between Cove and Portlethen...

Since it was short and close to the original route, I don’t feel that a new Slow Ways route is required. At this point other Slow Wayers may wish to turn left here and follow the signs to the city century and the station, had the route gone that way I may well have given it five stars....

The Westhill to prime four section is not particularly memorable, but after that it's really nice linking several of the nature reserves and footpaths in the city. Cross the road and pick up the footpath signed Rubislaw The next section has various footpaths on both sides of the burn with options to choose your favourite side Cross Anderson drive and head for Rubislaw den south Queens cross church...

Walk this routeAfter leaving the main tracks through Kirkhill forest take the less used farm tracks that head in the general direction of the Aberdeen bypass. When reaching the junction at the end of the farm tracks, take the field on the left not the overgrown path straight ahead. When reaching the corner of the field, there is a path near a small berry tree to the right of the bungalow. Look for the way marked path that takes you off the pavement and down the steps back to the river / under Diamond bridge...
