Help connect Abercynon

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Abercynon’s Slow Ways.

Pretty easy to follow, although judging by all the dead bracken around, it might be more difficult earlier in the year....

After crossing the main A472 road the footpath is signposted to start with, but then nothing after that, except for a couple of waymarks at Whitehall Farm, so you need to follow the map carefully. After Whitehall Farm, the main problem for me was that there are farm gates everywhere, so it was easy to go wrong, which I did several times, but eventually found my way through the maze and out on to the lane....

A little care should be taken on the roads at Quakers Yard, but otherwise this is a pleasant, flawless slow way....

Walk this route

An easy route to follow and a reliably pleasant walk. Much of it paved so also perfectly useable in a welsh valleys winter....

Walk this route

It`s easy to walk, easy to navigate, as it`s a national cycle route (Taff Trail, route 8) and suitable for wheels of all descriptions. As pointed out in another review, there is no direct link from the Taff Trail to Abercynon station, as shown on the map, so a little loop is needed via River Court....

Walk this route

An easy walk in the Taff Bargoed and Taff valleys, although the first section is quite steep going down the zig-zag path from Treharris to the Taff Bargoed river....

At the time of my walk, there were major works being carried out near Abercynon station car park and you can`t get to the station directly from the "snicket" path from the B4275....

A really nice route that follows the the river between Mountain Ash and Abercynon. The route is very easy to follow and flat. the path is almost all concrete so suitable for everyone on foot or bike....

Walk this route

Very easy to navigate, when you exit the train station at Abercynon, cross over the river and join the Taff trail, follow the blue Taff trail signs all the way into Pontypridd....

Walk this route

The Cilfynydd to Caerphilly section is fine, but the path running parallel to the A4054 (Abercynon to Cilfynydd) wasn’t in use for the full distance (overgrown, not maintained). Walking from Abercynon, the first part was fine but then it zigzags up the slope and becomes a path across the disused tip/quarry, joining a dead-end road leading to National Road and then Cilfynydd. Although it was a nice walk, it extends the distance and involves extra climbing & descent....

Walk this route

The footpath between Cilfynydd and Penheol Ely Road is mostly clearly marked, and the long stretch along Eglwysilan Road is fine - not much traffic and great views....

MaddyT

Walk this route

This is an easy route, mostly following the Taff Trail (good for cycling). There are a few steps on the path linking Treharris with the bridge over the river at the bottom of the hill, but these could easily be avoided....

1) I couldn’t find the footpath leading uphill from the A4054 (just above Abercynon) so I stayed on the main road until the junction with the quiet road that twists up the hill....
