Description
An alternative route avoiding the A15 and using cycle paths (National Route 12).
A feature of walking anywhere in this area is that there is a lot of new cycle paths and housing developments, rapid developments on the ground will change paths in the area over time.
Parkland walking North from Yaxley past a new housing estate. Then right along a path next to a well used cycle path which is not contruction land as signposted, take the foot path or cycle path. The path and cycle path merge to go around an estate under construction. There are slopes and steps over the rail line into Crown Lake Country Park.
There is a route (see picture) North from here past the Amazon warehouses but it is marked private (but is it?).
Instead go West and pick up the cycle path after passing through Farcet (no shops or facilities). There is a nice lakeside walk after the junction. The cemetery is open 9am-6pm Apr-Sept and 9am-4pm Oct-Mar. On the cyclepath again over the Nene and into a riverside park with views of the Cathedral. Through the shopping centre with nice historic buildings to the station

01 Sep 2024I walked from Yaxley to Peterborough. 3.5 stars really
A mixed walk, a little frustrating being able to see your destination but having to walk around, having a good mapped paths and another new one right beside it. This is a wheel friendly walk, although some paths are rough and there is a single short steep slope up to a new road (not on OS maps yet).
Some tedious walking alongside busy roads. But some beautiful paths also, nice parks, woodland walks, good views, graffiti gallery, shops and historic buildings. The good parts made up for the less good. This path will improve when all the development is done.
A varied and engaging walk.
