23 Jul 2023This is an undulating route, so there are plenty of views to enjoy. The terrain is predominantly off road, crossing a mixture of arable and pasture, so there's a reasonable chance of encountering sheep or cattle. I wouldn't recommend the route for anything wheeled.
Considering its length, it does a pretty good job of staying rural, skirting villages rather than going through them, with the exception of Steeple Aston and Tackley, both of which have shops. At 14 miles, some might want to consider walking it in sections, as I did: there are railway stations at Heyford and Tackley, and some bus services, but check the timetables as the services aren't frequent.
It's reasonably easy to follow, too, though there are a few places where the exact point where the direction changes isn't clear.
Firstly, eastward of Middle Aston Lane, on the road to Grange Farm (SP479278), the route turns southward but there's no sign to indicate that there's a path.
Secondly, in Lower Heyford, just after the public phone box (complete with a working phone!), at SP487248, the route turns south: it's a narrow grassy path with a small gate at the end, which looks like it could be private.
Finally, not long after that, at SP492243, the route moves from the southeastward footpath to the southward bridleway. While the footpath is clear across this wheatfield, the bridleway isn't - at least when I walked it.
