Description

This route is much more off-road than Winnew one but barely longer although it climbs more. I have always walked the route from New Alresford to Winchester. It leaves New Alresford by following the river Alre downstream until the path joins the Oxdrove Way and climbs up to the Downs reaching 106 m asl on Itchen Stoke Down. It then descends by a lane and across fields to Itchen Abbas. After crossing the B3047 the path then follows the right bank of the river Itchen via Martyr Worthy and King’s Worthy all the way to Winchester. In King’s Worthy cross the A33 dual-carriageway with care then navigate past houses, St Mary’s church and some office buildings. After taking a subway under the A34 the path follows the west side of the Winnall Moors nature reserve before entering the suburbs of Winchester. It ends at the bus station

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

As with Winnew one, this route is suitable for walkers only - indeed it shares the same inaccessible centre section from Martyr Worthy to Itchen Abbas.

It has much less road walking, which makes it superior to route one, but I think we can still do better.
