Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

25 Jun 2023I walked this from Sunniside to Whickham.
This route follows the B6316 north out of Sunniside along the road starting at the Methodist Church (pic 1). If you are on the left hand side of the road as you approach Hole Lane (pic 2), crossover as the LHS path runs as you starting descending into the dip (pic 3). The road then travels through the built up area on the south side of Whickham. Once you reach the B6317 turn left to go through the centre of village to the official ending point.
The route is largely flat and is on well made up paths for its whole length. There are plenty of curbs but all seem safe for those who will be travelling on wheels.
So is this a good route?
It is safe. The speed limit for the majority of its length is 20mph and so the traffic does not feel oppressive. It is a good route winter when some of the local field paths are hard to pass.
There are off road options that could be explored in a new route as suggested by a previous reviewer, but no reason in my view this shouldn't be one of two or more routes between Sunniside and Whickham.

23 Apr 2021This is a terrible route, it is not a Slow Way at all, it simply follows the road. There is a lovely route over the fields through Marshall's farm. Go that way instead.

09 Jun 2021A ‘slow way’ should be any route you can walk from one point to another. Yes this is along a road but when it’s rained hard and you don’t want muddy boots it’s a good way to still get out and about. I walk this route regularly and see the same faces so others like the walk too.
