Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

30 Apr 2024This route is step free and the paved promenade is generally fairly smooth, though there are bumps. Note that the marked route goes through the Long Rock nature reserve (the green area at Swalecliffe). This is best for walkers. For wheelers and cyclists it's best to use the paved path that curves in a semi-circle around the nature reserve.

30 May 2023This route is very nice to walk, very direct and easy to follow (because you just follow the coast line). Would definitely recommend.

04 Oct 2022I walked this on a warm autumn morning, with light clouds, from Whitstable to Herne Bay.
Unlike most routes, this doesn't start at a station, although it finishes at one (Herne Bay). The route is nearly fully flat, along paved paths along the ocean. Whitstable has a lovely little harbour, with oyster cafes. Along Swalecliffe there is a short stretch over grass, but it was easy to walk on, and not muddy. Along the horizon you can see many windmills, and along the beach front many colourful beach houses. When I walked it, the tide was out, and many birds and some people were trying to find things in the mud. At Herne Bay there is an amusement pier.
There are toilets at Tankerton Beach and at Hampton (Spa Esplanade). I bet in the summer it would be a lot busier, but I enjoyed my quiet Monday Morning walk.

03 Nov 2021I walked the route from Herne Bay to Whitstable.
The route is almost entirely paved beachfront promenade, safe for a very short dirt section around Swalecliffe.
Just west of Swalecliffe, the route has you leave the promenade for a short stretch, but I just stayed on the water and really enjoyed walking along the ocean for the whole walk. Easy and gorgeous walking, with lots of people out which made it quite an enjoyable adventure.

28 May 2021This is a lovely mainly flat route route, suitable for walking, running and cycling. (although there are some sections where you would need to dismount). It can be quite busy with pedestrians in some sections so be aware of this.
The route is mainly on tarmac/ flat paths that run along the coast. There are interesting things to see along the way. When we reached Herne Bay we continued along the sea front, rather than head up Station Road, so we could pick up an ice cream and enjoy the view.
Afterwards we returned back to Whitstable along the coast.
