Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

12 Nov 2022I walked this from Whickham to Gateshead. The first section of this route is along back streets, through an attractive graveyard and then along footpaths. There are occasional views across the river valley. We then come a to a fairly steep downhill section beginning along street then joining cycle path towards Dunston. The first part of this is wooded , it then passes through the classic post industrial landscape and past factories before joining the road from Metrocentre to Dunston and the Teams. There is a short section of cycle path on this stretch which doesn't seem to add much to a straightforward walk along the road. The road past what was the Gas Works is ok but I would suggest a better route would be to cut down to Dunston Staithes and walk along the river then rejoin the path through Gateshead Riverside Park. The route through this park is good and after using footbridge to cross busy road it is a fairly gentle climb through Windmill Hills Park then to destination.
This route is quite good and I would say fairly accesible.

06 Jun 2021Combination of urban pathways, uneven ground in park areas and some steep inclines. Probably not the best walk to attempt in the dark or low light as some areas are unlit and others are alongside busy roads. There are no toilets or shops along the route, just at the start & the endpoints.
