Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

It's a nice walk with good views either from the top of Eccles pike or while you are contouring round it. Through fields with sheep in and hay meadows. It's a bit overgrown in places towards Chapel. It could do with amending at the start to shorten it slightly & save an unnecessary uphill.

Walked from Chapel to Whaley, and included a little detour to the top of Eccles Pike, since you pass so close to it. A really nice walk - it does include steep sections, and paths are occasionally faint or unclear on the ground, but there's no complicated navigation here anyway. Enter field, walk to other side of field, climb stile.

Reasons to do this walk: lovely views throughout the middle section of the walk, on a nice day you can see as far as central Manchester. Eccles Pike has a topograph on top which points out nearby tors and settlements, and you can see Combs Reservoir from there too.

Underfoot, it's a lot of sheep pasture, as well as some rocky paths and one small field that had a lot of cows. Previously in this area I've also seen cows wandering around on Eccles Pike summit. There is also a small amount of road-walking but I saw more cyclists than cars. There are multiple stiles of different designs on this route, as well as narrow gates.

There are occasional gates with signs like 'Farmwatch: you're being watched' which suggest the path might be blocked by a landowner, but none of them were locked and the public footpath signs continue past the gate. The GPS track as it currently exists is accurate and suitable for use.
