Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

This is quite a long route which took me over four hours (including the detour to the Blue Idol for my lunch stop). I walked in March after a wet winter and lots of sections were quite muddy, both footpaths and bridleways. However there are some good all weather sections, especially Old House Lane.

The route goes past the smock mill at West Chiltington and also St. Mary's Church in the village. The church is well worth a visit as it retains extensive medieval wall paintings. The old village stocks and whipping post can also be seen just outside the churchyard.

North of West Chiltington, the route passes through the extensive Nyetimber vineyards then heads into Old House Lane about a mile further on. The old house in question is the Blue Idol, a wealden timber-framed farmhouse which was repurposed as a quaker meeting house in 1691 by William Penn and his colleagues. Quaker services are still held here every Sunday. William Penn had previously founded the US state of Pennsylvania and the city of Philadelphia. The house is a few hundred yards off the route, but is well worth the detour, especially as the peaceful garden is a lovely lunch stop.

When I looked at the route on the website, I was concerned about the section walking along the busy A272 into Coolham. However, I can confirm that this section has a pavement and is perfectly safe for pedestrians.

There are two pubs on the route, the Selsey Arms at Coolham crossroads and the George and Dragon at Dragons Green. Lots of gates and stiles. I encountered only horses in fields but it is highly likely that there will be cattle and / or sheep at other times of the year. Not suitable for wheels.

Some nice walking. You do have to cross a couple of fields disturbing looking "Bull in field" signs but I saw no sign of them. The windmill at West Chilt is nice.
