Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I walked half this route on 26 April 2021, in the reverse direction, from Partridge Green to Dial Post. It was very enjoyable and easy to walk. No problems with navigating except at one point; where the path goes into Hookshile Wood there was no finger post or marker, and the path basically disappeared for a moment. Probably wouldn't be an issue heading east towards Partridge Green.
Mentioning Hookshile Wood, there is a beautiful display of bluebells right now; well worth the walk at this time of year just to see them.
The walk is also great because Knepp, just outside Dial Post, is well worth a visit. It is a walker's oasis all on its own. Even without time to go to Knepp, there is a pub in Dial Post as well as a cafe at the Garden Centre.
HOWEVER, there is a huge downside to this route. The A24. I had carelessly assumed there was a footbridge over or a tunnel under the A24. There isn't. So walkers have to risk life and limb crossing this 70mph dual carriageway. There is no way that I would recommend crossing it with pushchairs or wheelchairs, if you are not a fast walker / runner, or in low visibility conditions. And that was on a COVID day, with (theoretically) less traffic than on a 'normal' day. The only solution / alternative route for an alternative WESPAR route would be to go via Ashington, or via the A272 junction (where there are traffic lights).

I would walk it again, I would suggest it to others, especially if they have got a couple of hours to spend walking around Knepp as well. It is well drawn and reasonably straight. But it is not safe for all.

All in all, 3 stars is possibly fair.
