Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

09 Jun 2023Walked this in good dry weather and took exactly three hours without rushing. The walk takes you up to a monument at the top of the hill above West Kirby (a short section of steep steps) and then along through well walked paths, which I suspect would be muddy in winter, through wooded areas at highish level. There is a seat and good views at the monument. There are many paths left and right that can be taken by mistake so I needed to consult the app occasionally to make sure I was on the right path. You cross a road and then go along a track and then along segregated paths by the side of fields between fences until you reach a main road at Thurstaston. Unfortunately there is quite a stretch of noisy busy traffic to endure as you walk uphill along Telegraph Road and it is a pity there is not alternative. After a while there is a car park for Thurstaston Hill and you can take respite for a short while by crossing the road to this and taking the path parallel to the main road, to rejoin it a little later. There are some benches here, where I sat down for lunch. There is a Pub at the roundabout on the route which provides an alternative place to stop. The walk then goes down a road without a path for a short while to the picturesque St Bartholemews Church and then along well walked clear paths and tracks at high level with occasional good views across the estuary to join the road after Oldfield farm. After a short stretch or pavement walking the route takes you into the lovely Heswall Dales and along to Heswall. Here too you have to be careful to follow the correct path as there are many incorrect options. Once again though the app was spot on and any incorrect deviations were short. There is one small stretch up a very rocky and steep path, where I had to use my hands a couple of times. The walk is a very good one, linking up some lovely areas of the Wirral. It has a few steep uphill stretches, but they are short and on the whole it was not too strenuous. There was not a single stile! The road section is the only disappointing section of the walk which stopped me giving it 5 stars.
